4 Governing bodies, 91 champions!!

Its amazing what i can get up to on a boring Sunday morning.
Having counted up all the World, Super, Interim and Emerits champions i came up with 91 people claiming to be a World boxing champion. And that was just counting the WBA, WBC, WBO and IBF.

not bad eh!
The IBF actually come out with the least champions, only 1 in each division.
the WBA are the worst with 32. And the WBC and WBO each have 21 champions.

I may of missed some though.

just think how it would be if you went for The big four, plus WBU, IBO, and counted all the 'WBA-International' or 'Latino-Caribbean' belts that seem to crop up on the record of any 'prospect' these days

Wouldn't it be awesome if a fighter decided to on a mission to pick up every available belt in a division that he was eligible to fight for?

I know Roy Jones Jr. held the WBC, WBA, IBF, IBO, IBA, WBF, NBA at one point, someone should try and break it.

Possibly, though the last WBU title fight was between Willie Limond and Ryan Barrett in May 2009.

Bronko McKart is now calling himself a three-time world champion, having added the UBO belt to his collection over the weekend.

That's amazing. It just shows how the belts are not quite what they used to be.

I like IBF though, no messing just out right world champs. Thats how they all should be.

yeh the IBF is by far the best belt. Enforces mandatoires, no interim and super belts, have to win an eliminator to become mandatory, have to beat a ranked fighter to be ranked in the top 10.

It would be better if all the top fighters said f**k you and refused to fight for any belts.

no need to fight, if you have money you can own them all... I bet Sulaiman will be the first one to offer you a belt... :DD

I would say "ask someone who knows", but I think you'd struggle to find that someone!

Possibly something to do with previous president Robert Lee getting sent down for selling rankings & general corruption some years back.

How the WBC and WBA have never fallen afoul of the law is beyond me. Well, other than the 32 mil or so the WBC owe Graciano Rocchigiani. I was hoping that bill would kill the WBC. It sadly hasn't.

I hope the wbc 'silver' champs were also included, they're important titles. .

I found out through watching some bizarre tournament on eurosport a couple of weeks that the WBC also sanction kickboxing

I hope you included me in your figures. I hold the little known but very prestigious WBOLOX Aluminium Title at Super Junior Mediumweight. I may vacate though, the tossers have just crowned a new 'Standby Champion In Case of Champion in Recess Situation Arises'. I feel this undermines my achievement. To be frank it's a bloody liberty after I paid them £5 in sanctioning fees.

C*nts. :KO:

Imagine if there were only 1 belt per division, and fighters had to actually fight each other to get to the top??

That is the answer, but it will NEVER happen! Boxing is ruined because of it. It really fcuks me off big time!

Its been a problem for a very long time, in the early days it was the colour bar, many top black boxers never got a shot at the world crown.
then the mob took over for a while and talented boxers didn't get a look in, and now we have the ruling bodies.

Is the answer a new body that the top boxers agree is #1 as your never going to get the current bodies to unify. Maybe some of the recently rich boxers could chip in and start a new body.

All these minnow organisations post solid ratings but they mean nothing at all, as they will sanction almost anything (the WBE once had a 0-5 guy fight for its "world" title).

On a tangent, I know one of the UBO's "champs" - Kalie Jacobus of Vanuatu. Well, I say I know him, but I haven't seen him since 2004 and since he literally comes from the jungle, I don't think he's grasped the concepts of email and the internet! Still, from what I saw back then, he's actually very talented, or at least as talented as an unhoned Third World boxer with no backing can be!

Further side note, and a bit of useless trivia, his UBO title win attracted a crowd of 6,000 - considering the population of Vanuatu is about 180,00, that means 3% of the country's entire population watched the fight live (no idea about TV figures)! If such a percentage attended a fight in Britain, that would mean a crowd of 1.8 million people!
