I re-watched a load of his fights the other week. He really was a small super middle.

I remember the [first] Galfi fight as if it were yesterday.

Interesting, because I keep thinking this is what Audley needs to do. Seems a great idea for a fighter who at times lacks that self belief.

Amazing to think that a former world champion, when he came back couldn't get the fights. If I remember, that was the reason why he called it a day. He was nominated to fight for the British title, but terms couldn't be agreed with any promoter.

I don't slag off retired boxers normally but his fight with Neville Brown was a disgrace - how many times did he stick the head on Brown? Should have been disqualified. Secondly - getting knocked out by a very blown up (thats being kind) Dingaan Thobela and accusing him of loading his gloves with dusters - an absolutley outrageous accusation to make which was never proven and I see that accusation didn't make the finished article.

I am glad he is healthy and happy. Was never a fan though.

True, certainly about the Thobela thing..... indeed when reading your post it actually made me realise that it was NEVER proven. My immediate image of Thobela is of a cheat, the accusation made far more headlines than the fact nothing was concreate. Things can be said in the heat of the moment though (remember Eubank's accusations about Michael Watson being on something) - but it was definately something that should have been investigated before he opened his mouth. Massive accusation and one that will always be on Thobela's biography.

As for the nuts.....ummm...... yes I agree, partially. Undoubtedly was naughty, cannot dispute this. However, I think it was more of a rough house tactics as opposed to like the nut Martin Power did vs Dale Robinson. Whilst not in the rules, it is almost "within the rules" if the ref isn't strong enough to pull you up about it. Kind of like with Evander Holyfield, another naughty fighter - but as the refs isn't strong enough to at least warn up - then can see why they continue if they get away with it. I do wonder how much the fight would have changed had the ref warned him - I don't think Catley would have got DQ'd.... I think he would change his approach which possibly could have cost him the fight. He was rough with the elbows that night also.

Maybe some Karma occured when he got robbed of a victory in a world title fight vs Woodhall.

I'm a big fan of Catley and on the few occasions I saw him training at the Empire in Bristol he came across a friendly, humble guy.
There was another thread recently about under-rated boxers and I think Catley's achievements have been criminally under-rated by British boxing fans. In recent years our 'champions' have been characterised by soft defences and a failure to venture out of their own 'backyard', but he went to Canada and beat Lucas in thrilling fashion and then repeated the trick against Beyer in Germany. Amazing performances and yet went under the radar at the time and history hasn't been any kinder.
As for Thobela, while it's obviously impossible to prove, South African boxing isn't exactly known for its enforcement of rules and regs, and if memory serves me correctly Glenn's face looked battered in a way that was utterly disproportionate compared to any other fight he was involved in. That, coupled with the context of the fact he was the only fighter Thobela ever managed to stop above welterweight, are sufficient to start alarm bells ringing for me.
Ian, did you speak with Glenn about Dean Francis at all? I saw a couple of their spars at the Empire and Francis just oozed class - would have loved to have heard how far Glenn thought Dean could have gone if it wasn't for the shoulder injury...

I was with Glenn last week, he's involved with a college boxing academy. Met him a few times and he's a nice guy.

I think what started the wraps thing with thobela was a picture taken afterwards gloves off celebrating and his wrap looked a funny shape and were in a very strong shape for someone going thru a hard fight.

Wasn't my piece, mate. Was by a chap some of you might remember from a few years back called Paul Concannon who was my Bristol man for BBN and had more success doing Yankee MMA stuff. Like most people with intelligence though, he saw sense and got the f out of boxing writing and did something which will actually make him money.

I think he bumped into Catley and just did a bit on him because it was interesting. That was the angle so loads of stuff was bound to be missed out.
