Young Scottish hopeful Paul Appleby will fight for the vacant WBO SuperFeather Weight Intercontinental title on the Undercard of Ricky Burns first defends of his WBO World title on the 4th December. An opponent hasnt been named yet but this is what Paul has to say

I thought I was having a non-title fight on December 4, so this is a nice surprise,” said the 23-year-old. “It will do my ranking with the WBO some good and we will see where we go from there. My dream has always been to be a world champion, and if I had the opportunity to fight for a world title, I would definitely take it.

Looks like Burns and Appleby may be on collision course..

Yea thats what the Warren Boxing Orginasation will be planning
as much as i want the scottish guys doing well it kind of takes the shine of the world title for me when because you are from same country adn it makes commerical sense that these fights get touted.

i prefer seeing these guys fight top guys in there wieght folk that have earned a shot
but hey thats the way boxing is now.

Hoepfully appelpy is in with someone decent and gets good few rounds

Despite all the hype I've never been convinced by Appleby. Seen him up close 3 or 4 times and always thought he looked very vulnerable even against the lower level type guys if you like. For what its worth, I don't think he beat John Simpson either. Anyway, be interested to see how he's progressing now.

So Appleby vs Burns next year?

It has always amazed me that governing bodies approve title fights without an opponent.

Appleby, though, is a really good fighter. I thought he well beat Simpson and was only 21 at the time, so knocking him seems ridiculous.

Really like Appleby as a fighter. I think he has the potential to go all the way. Still very young and learning but certainly has the ability.

This should be Ricky's title..... to allow him to build his career by taking on the best names in the division.

It's not a meal ticket for unproven above domestic level fighters to make money from.

I was going to say earn your shot but Burns didn't really earn his..... but the point still stands.

how did burns not earn his shot? he was the mandatory challenger...martinez had to fight him

It wasn't intended to be a pop at Burns at all - my point was that Burns didn't actually beat anyone good in order to climb so high in the WBO rankings.

I expected him to lose too because the step up in class from O'Hara and Al-Hamidi to Martinez was f'ing huge.... but he surprised me (and many others) by winning clearly.

know wot u mean a was surprised that a commonwealth champion would b the mandatory challenger for a legit world title but scotland now has a gr8 world champ again and burns will b a force in the super feather division. wud luv to c a fight against steve foster jnr.

I don't think a fight with Foster is a realistic possibility owing to promotional issues...... he wants to get himself across the Atlantic and make a name for himself.

He's beaten the man that many people felt was the #1, pretty much everyone had him in the top 3, I'd hate to see Burns just fighting the domestic lads for the sake of giving them a payday.

If they want a fight, they should earn it. He's got a straight forward defence coming up, after that we should want to see him tested (and so should he FWIW).
