Groves comparing Adam Booth to Freddie Roach on Ringside

I nearly spat my dinner out laughing.

That kid is totally delusional. He's a fair prospect but there's better in the UK let alone the rest of the world, and as for Booth? Sitting looking smug and cocky doesn't match up to the definitive plans and actions of a true boxing man like Roach.

You can argue that Haye fought one tactically perfect fight against Valuev who is hardly a boxer anyway, but Roach is a master of breaking down opponents strengths and weaknesses for his fighters and working on new tools for his charges to cope with every challenge. Roach is a true boxing man through and through. He's all about the sport. Booth is a businessman making his way in the fight game (IMHO)

Insane talk.

Far too much emphasis is put on a trainer if you ask me.

Roach's hype is unbelievable.

I've spoke with David Price and Tony Dodson regarding Booth and they both claim he is a fanatstic trainer.

I still hold Booth responsible for Dodson's loss to Quigley though

Tactically perfect for the Valuev fight, Gomez? I had Haye losing it.

Easily. Haye threw very little. Valuev didn't do much, but I had him way more active than Haye and doing more in terms of aggression. It's like the Valuev/Holyfield fight - I had Valuev winning that too. Dancing and running doesn't do nothing for me. And this is coming from a then-Haye fan.

Who do you think landed the more punches?

That's all well and good, but Valuev didn't hit him.

And Haye only hit Valuev a dozen times or so.

Mark, that's neither here nor there. I didn't forget that Haye broke his hand, but that doesn't affect the scoring of a fight. It was very commendable by Haye to perform like that with a hurt hand, but that still doesn't change the fact that Haye lost a lot of rounds when he landed zero punches.

It was a close fight, but the freak nicked it, IMO.

It was a close fight and i had Haye nicking it  i wouldnt of complained if the decision went the other way as it was tight. I think the Haye camp are always excellently prepared and always come to the ring with several plans for a fight. however i feel Haye's biggest weekness is his love of a tear up as he seems to let his emotions rule his head at times and throws a plan out the window, the Valuev fight wasnt one of these times and IMO would of been a lot clearer if Haye hadnt bust his hand.
Yeah, I agree that if his hand didn't go then it would've been a decisive win for Haye.

nothing wrong in believing in your coach, it's fighter's like macklin who doubt there trainer's ability thinking the grass is greener elsewhere which is a weakness imo.
i dont rate booth one little bit. he's lucky to have got haye, who he never made & cant reproduce imo. like degale said he boxed better as an am :!:

horses 4 courses.

to be fair I'm not saying Booth isn't a half decent trainer, the bottom line is though, Roach is the top man in the game at the moment and for me personally, I look at Booth and think lawyer/accountant, whereas I look at Roach and think of Boxing. The man looks like he'd give his life for the sport and lives and breathes it, I don't get the same thing from Booth, no doubt a smart guy and clearly knows his stuff, but that's different from being one of the all time great trainers.

Roach has a history of world champions and world champions overcoming a range of challenges, great tactician and instinct - Booth has had a couple of good fighters and only really Valuev was a victory of any magnitude and that's really just to do with the size of the lad.

It's one thing believing in your trainer, but I just think it's a ridiculous comparison, it's like comparing himself to Sugar Ray Leonard or something.

As did most people watching it then.
Do a search for the RBR of the contest (it wasn't a fight)

Fair enough, but a trainer is only as good as the ability of the boxers he has. Yes a trainer can work on certain things but if the boxer isnt the best then it is going to be hard work. I agree boxers that change trainers to often is a weakness and of course certain coach try and coach certain styles they are comfortable with which may or may not suit certain fighters. I think you are being hard on Booth who has yet really to do much wrong and when he has he seems to have learnt from the experience.
booth is a gent, but i dont rate him at all. there's load's that do. ive seen him working the corner on a few occasion's one was martin holegate i think who boxed alosegun who he had gone in rd 1-3?? but then took a hiding & should of been pulled out alot earlier & booth looked lost.

so did you see Amir Khan entering the Top 20 lb for lb ratings after the Prescott debacle?

You think under either of his other coaches he would have put in such disciplined performances against Kotelnik or Paulie?

Turning Pac from an all out brawler to such an incredible technician with the emphasis on his speed and finding the right focus for each fight (i.e. the left hook against Hatton)

Masterminding Steve Collins victories over the likes of Benn and Eubank.

How anyone doesn't see what Roach brings puzzles me personally. Just my opinion.

James Toney, Bernard Hopkins, Michael Moorer, Wladimir Klitschko and even Bobby Pacquiao.

Thing is they got beat, so nobody likes to talk about those fighters too much.

Morales completely out boxed and out-foxed Pacquiao. I though Marquez beat him both times - infact the first draw i thought was a robbery.

Eubank & Benn were well past their best, with both men losing their edge after putting previous opponents Michael Watson and Gerald McClellan in a very bad way.

Khan has fought Malignaggi who is v. average. And had lost 2 of his previous 4 fights. Salita had done 1 x 12 rounder before fighting Khan and was very padded indeed.

Pacquiao is a gifted warrior with lots of raw ability and Roach has moulded it - but I really do think he's dining out way to much on one fighter.

Take Pacquiao out of the stable and you've basically got Buddy McGirt.

Adam Booth has a very close relationship with David, similar to that of Hatton and Billy Graham (back in the day). That's half the trick of being a good trainer - being able to communicate with your fighter and understand them like few others do.

In terms of his accomplishments, I think he's done a good job with Groves so far. He is progressive, open minded and pragmatic in his approach. Its hard to dismiss him at this point as we need more time to judge his skills as a trainer. But he obviosuly clicks with Haye.

As for one poster suggesting he is not 'a boxing man' (still really unsure what that means), I think thats ridiculous. He was an amateur boxer back in the day(and a very talented one) for the Lynn AC and coached at a few AM clubs. He embarked on a career with David where they had a shared vision - he's boxing through and through, I am sure. Just beacause he's slighty different from you normal trainers that doesnt mean he's not genuine.

Roach, has earnt his stripes, knows the game inside out. The improvements he has made with Paquiao are there for all to see - I can't imagine Manny would have evolved into the star he is now with another trainer. Roach whilst very technical also is wise in other areas - such as placing trust in Alex Ariza, allowing him to work behind the scenes and then with his star fighters. He's a forward thinkning guy and thats what keeps him ahead.

Sure he's had losers and been blessed with some fantastic talent walking through those Wildcard doors, but people don't end up there by chance - he has reputation that has been built on the word of mouth of those that he trained.
