Freddie Roach has spoken out to say that Antonio Margarito showed "A lot of balls" that he didn't quit against Manny Pacquiao, who improved his record to 52-3-2, 38ko.

But he added that the beating that he saw Margarito take from his charge may have ended the Tornado's career.

"He took too much unnecessary punishment to me. I would have stopped that fight. After eight rounds, it was over and it was just a matter of time.

"I truly, truly think the job of the trainer is to protect your fighter and Margarito's corner should have saved him. He may never fight again.

Pacquiao also added that he was concerned by the damage on Tony's face and as a result, he implored the referee to stop the fight in the 11th and the bloody mess of his opponent put off the new WBC light-middle champion from finishing him in the final round.

"I feel for my opponent, his eyes and his bloody face. I wanted the ref to look at it. In the 12th round I wasn't looking for a knockout." he said.

Margarito now awaits surgery to the broken eye socket, which comes in addition to the several stitches received around the cheek and eyebrow.

I was thinking the same thing. It always appeared to me that Margarito would last the distance, but he was not competitive and was really taking a beating.

He was still throwing punches and Pacquiao was knackered. He didn't take carry Margarito. Calzaghe carried RJJ.
Pacquiao couldn't finish Margarito full stop.

Jones took nowhere near the punishment Margarito took! Pacman destroyed Margarito, who will never be the same because of this again. I reckon there could be some lasting damage. Broken Eye Socket! Ouch!

Should have been stopped after the 10th round. Margarito can take a lot of pride away from lasting, but he was well and truly battered and the last 2 rounds were unnecessary.

I'm not saying that Jones did but Calzaghe definitely eased off the pedal in the championship rounds and let him see the final bell.

Margarito was still fighting even with the facial damage. If we are stopping a fight on facial damage Gatti wouldn't have finished half his fights

I think as much as anything, he certainly wasn't going to win on points, and seemingly didn't have the power to stop Pac so it brings into question if it was necessary. End of the day though, if Marg wanted to keep fighting, he wasn't going to get knocked out either and probably takes some pride in at least seeing it to the end.

True Margs power seemed like it had had diminshed at the end but Pacquiao couldn't stop him that's something to be proud of. The ref could have taken that away from him.

Margarito has done wrong in the past, but he was willing to fight to the death. He has my respect because of that

Beat the snot out of by a much smaller man. Why do we need so many weight classes again?

Because most smaller men are not as good as Manny Pacquiao....and of course, more sanctioning fees

Yes, very true. Maybe I am more pissed off with the many alpha-belts, and are taking it out on the many weight classes. Oh I don't know.... :D

Thing is, he isn't bothered about what Roach or us lot think, he'll only ne bothered about what his Mexican fans think, and they'll love him for it!

Margarito got what many thought he deserved after his antics with the gloves.

karma is a bitch.

cotto has never been the same since the margarito fight so it would be nicely ironic if margarito is now very much diminished after pacmans beating.

I still think Cotto can remain a top calibre fighter & remain a champion! ??

Cotto is a phenominal boxer. Just two defeats, in god knows how many fights, to real stars of the game. He can still be a force to be reckoned with.

Cotto took an equally brutal beating from Manny as Margarito did. He busted them both up pretty badly.

As a boxing technician Cotto is great, but he lacks a bit of power against the real top guys.

I think Cotto would stand a better chance against mayweather than manny to be honest, his style would be more suited to that of a defensive fighter, rather than the whirlwinds that came at him in his two defeats.

Agree with that.
