I think the problem is Sky in general. They constantly write cheques for unknown, unwilling cannon fodder to come over and fall over against our domestic fighters in dull, uninspiring fights.
The burns fight, the last prizefighter have bucked the trend - but the rest has been dross.
Some of the eastern bloc junk and the like of Daniel Peret practically live at the York Hall, picking up Sky money to put a 'prospect' through a few rounds - and were expected to pay for the privelage.
The magnificent 7 was generally well received, but again we had to shell out for the bloody thing. Sky should put more money into it to fund the thing, rather than rely on box office revenue.
Germany and lots of other countries air their fights for free - yet we pay PPV on top of subscriptions - and yet the cash ends up going into the profit forecast and not some re-investment back into providing higher calibre of regular fights.
If the cash gets put on the table, fighters are more prepared to grab the nettle and take a big risk.
Often promoters come on here and whinge and moan that we, the fans are being overly harsh or critical. When the reality is we are sick and tired of shelling out for crap.
"Lets put a reasonable headliner on, then flesh out the undercard with some of our prospects against a shed load of drivel" seems to be the approach if we crystalised it.
The promoters need to make interesting fights between their own stables, instead of ring fencing them off from one another for fear of the rival promoter's fighter beating their man.
It's like assembling a football team and then not playing other British teams.
Dear Santa,
I'd love to see a card titled Warren vs Hennessy and then have all their divisions fight each other. Or Maloney vs Warren - or whatever, you get my drift... oh and a 3D television with some blu ray porn.
Regards,
Boxing fan.

Don't know it's a case of Mick not being liked, but it's definitely a case of him being out of the Sky loop at the moment. As is well known, the current Sky deal is contracts with four promoters - the two Franks, Matchroom and Hatton. That was set earlier this year, that's what Sky have budgeted for - and while I'm not defending Sky, a budget is a budget, in any business, you have to stick to it.
A new budget, and new contracts, will be put in place next year. This will be interesting because it will be the first Adam Smith budget - he has inherited the current one. Smith has made it known that he wants Froch but at present his hands are tied by deals made before he became Head of Boxing at Sky.
I agree with Gomez's idea re diverting a portion of PPV revenue to the Sky budget, that seems plausible (from the outside, at least). Maybe that could happen. But until mid 2011 we're stuck with the already set budget and the existing contractual situation (although I'm not sure if the promotional contracts might be two-year deals, think I may have heard that) and, bottom line, we should probably be grateful for what we can get from Sky at the moment, because the other networks are doing sod all for boxing.

instead of giving a promotion company a 2 year contract for sky for fri/sat night show why not give out dates and say on these dates say twice a month what fights can you give me. Then pick the best fight of the lot. The promotor will then have to make even matchs to get the gig. Last night show was a waste of time the fights of late have been poor, only prizefighter super featherweight, mag 7 (which was ppv) and the burns v martinez have been good shows for me.
thats a great idea promotion company v promotion company but they will not do that.
look at tonight maybe the 2 best fights of the year and not on sky. Why were we given the choice to watch haye v harrison when everyone who likes boxing knows the result, and froch v arbaham, marquez v katsidis nowhere to be seen. Not even a word of any of the fights on sky sports news, my years contract is nearly up with sky and really am thinking about just going to freeview if i can get premier sports and primetime just for the boxing from the states and might aswell just go to the 2 or 3 if we are lucky of the good match ups that happen next year in the uk.

It beggars belief.
If ever there was a fighter that could snare casual boxing fans & turn them into hardcore fight fans, it's Froch.
His fights are nearly always exciting; he's a warrior who does not shirk a challenge & he has a brashness that you either love or hate.
A perfect recipe for a boxing star, yet they haven't signed him up.

Yes.
it's ridiculous bordering on pathetic that Froch isn't plying his trade on TV (properly).
A lot of thanks should go to Fraudley if what soembody said on here the other day is true, which is that the Beeb haven't shown any professional boxing since Fraudley skanked 'em fighting the Dutch Sonny Liston et al...

Hennessy is the problem I think! Lenny Daws has fought under matchroom last three fights, Murray two. If sky liked him he would get fights. Adam Smith new sky boxing controller please explain how you could not afford Marquez fight that a big failure imo?

Smith makes all the right noises in the article in BM and I really hope he's able to carry out some of the things he said he wants to do. His appointment is potentially a huge step forward for Brotish boxing.

What it is is a scandal. Hennessy might as well have Froch fighting in outer mongolia. How may people have Primetime available let alone subscribe to it?
Come on Adam Smith, get Froch on SKY please before its too late.
Cant SKY buy Hennessy out and promote Froch themselves?

Why is it everytime I try to like Froch he becomes a dick it's as though when he comes across well he decides to put his foot in it by becoming a prick again, that press conference was such poor proffesionilism

He's a public school knob. Brilliant analysis.
Where do you get the assumption that he's a yes man from? I admit he does brown-nose a lot when interviewing fighters but that doesn't automatically mean he's going to roll over when negotiating deals. Barney Francis seems an intelligent man and has doing a good job at Sky, I can't see him givng the role to Smith if he didn't think he could handle himself.
And of course Sky have the money to buy the fight - I think they made over £250m profits last year - but the budget that is set aside to purchase fights is, apparently, all gone.
