Interesting result. Phillips looked the part for a while, but then Peter Judson outlasted him in a war and the tall Welshman dropped out of sight. Apparently, he has a good job, is settled, and wants to give boxing one more go. Good luck to him.

He took time off to get a degree, which he got and has now made a comeback

I have a decent part time job to complement my boxing career, but I'll never be settled untill I fulfill my potential in the pro ranks, and that means at the very least a British title.

Was Phillips v Judson one of SKY's scraps of the year for 96? I have a vague recollection of Judson doing a lot of yelling in that fight.

I remember from an interview years ago that you were a kickboxer before becoming a boxer, is this correct?

My fight with Judson was indeed ranked one of the best fights of 96 by Sky Sports. your recollection of yelling is 99% accurate. It was me doing the yelling (an old habit that I have managed to shake off now).

I won the Junior World Featherweight Kickboxing title at 17, then turned to the pro ranks immediately after.

The Western Mail has a decent report of the fight:

DEAN PHILLIPS came back with a bang to flatten veteran Midlander Nigel Senior in the first round at yesterday afternoon's show at Swansea's Brangwyn Hall.

The 27-year-old Llanelli lightweight, in his first ring action for more than five years, showed no sign of ring rust as he speared jab after jab into the face of his 41-year-old opponent, before catching him with a cracking left to the jaw.

Senior tottered backwards and, drawing on the experience of a career dating back to 1985, dropped to one knee to take a count.

But when he rose, Phillips changed his target and produced a vicious body shot that sent the visitor to his haunches, grimacing in agony as referee Roddy Evans tolled the count over him.

"I didn't expect to beat him that quickly," said the happy victor. "After all, he'd never been stopped in the first round before in 89 fights. I saw he was open to the body and I just went for it."

Dean, what weight do you think you can make now. Will 126 be too much for you at this stage, cause you were 130 in your "first" career. I'm think Dean Phillips vs Dezzo Williams in a couple of years, that would spark an interest in Welsh boxing.

Whats your degree in, if you don't mind me asking. I remember your fight with Judson, but I always was led to believe that you failed and MRI scan after the fight. I'm glad I was proved wrong.

At 27, your dream is still alive - go for it.

I'm a full fledged Lightweight (135 lbs). Dazzo Williams is a Featherweight; he has been my chief sparring partner in the build up to my comeback. I plan on staying at Lightweight, as I feel so strong and powerful at that weight.

Before, I was struggling to stay at Super-featherweight, which is the main reason why I collapsed through dehydration after the Judson fight. There was nothing wrong upstairs; it was just dehydration and exhaustion.

I now plan on achieving big things at Lightweight.

Yeah no problems - I remember that you did campaign at Superfeather, but couldn't remember how hard or easy weight making was for you back then.

Legitimate titles are always the best. The British title means more than Cookie's IBO title in my opinion. It's such a shame Jason lost his European title in the manner he did, but at least he proved he could win a genuine title before switching to the IBO crown. So many others just settle for the minor 'world' titles. Would WBU cruiserweight champion Enzo Maccarinelli beat British and Commonwealth champion Mark Hobson for example? I don't know.
