a good idea?

regardless of it's flaws the super-six has produced fights we most probably would not have seen otherwise...i like it and enjoy the format within it's limitations...

so why not an actual league? with promotions / demotions based on results and annual play offs to pit the top 4 against each other leading to a final?

obviously the format i've outlined there may not be perfect but as a concept i think a league has potential.

Haven't you heard of the new pro league that AIBA started called the World Series of Boxing with 4 teams in Europe, 4 in the Americas and 4 in Asia? There are 5 weight classes with team and individual championships. The winner in each weight class gets an automatic bid to the Olympics making London the first Olympics with pro boxers.

Any concept like this would only work if you established a new, wholly breakaway organisation that signed up all competing fighters to its roster, like Dana White has done in the UFC. Trying to initiate something where you had to negotiate the current international promotional gang-f--k would be impossible.

absolutely agree....so you pick the youngsters to begin with....the outstanding ones...sign them to long term lucrative contracts...and do the same to the less well known but accomplished and more independent fighters such as Haye, Froch etc....

They are still considered amateurs but are able to fight in this AIBA approved pro league and still be allowed to fight in the Olympics. It is AIBA's way to try and take over pro boxing since they have control of the best amateurs in the world before they turn pro. The officials are AIBA officials that went through WSB training to work the fights like pros with 10 pt rounds, etc. They fight 5 rounds, no headgear or vest.
They just had their 2nd week of scheduled team vs team fights. They have already run into a problem with two of the US states that had teams. The state athletic commissions in those states, California and Florida told the WSB that they can only use their own SAC officials and not the WSB. All of the pro alphabet groups are worried about the WSB and want to see it gone. Potentially, the WSB could have a real effect on the future of pro boxing but personally, I think it will have a hard time making money and catching on with the non hardcore boxing fan.

They are still considered amateurs but are able to fight in this AIBA approved pro league and still be allowed to fight in the Olympics. It is AIBA's way to try and take over pro boxing since they have control of the best amateurs in the world before they turn pro. I saw the first one between the team from paris and the Italian team from Milan. It was strange because both teams had foreign fighters aswell, and it was weird watching amateur boxing with no head gaurds but there was some cracking fights - the Paris team had a cracking Irish fighter, can't remeber his name but think he got the silver medal at the olympics.

While not as complex, but arguably more attractive, I don't get why there aren't more Nation v Nation boxing cards.

I remember the UK v US contender thing up in Newcastle a few years back that seemed to go down well. Surely a decent, competitive card could be put together across the weight divisions for UK v US, a Ryder Cup style Europe v US, The Boxing Ashes, England v Scotland? I'm not saying it would have to be Haye v Arreola, Froch v Ward and Khan v Bradley in terms of levels, but would be at least as attractive as some of the Prizefighters wouldn't it?

John Joe Nevin. He didn't medal but he's a cracking fighter.

Who was the Italian heavyweight gold medalists who won it for Milan in the last fight? He was the boxer of the night.

Appollo Creed I saw it on some foxsports thing in Australia but it had eurosport in the corner.

Clemente Russo, 2007 World Champion and 2008 Olympic silver medallist at 91 KG. The Italiian 91+ kgs Roberto Cammarelle who won the Olympic gold did not turn pro or decide to fight in the WSB.
