WBC CHAMPION CARL FROCH SPEAKS ON HIS RETURN

by HS Press
Carl 'the cobra' Froch and his coach Robert McCracken put together a master class performance which the power-punching strongman Arthur Abraham had no way of overcoming in Helsinki at the weekend.

Froch, who moves into second place on the Super Six scoreboard behind tournament leader and WBA champion Andre Ward, will now face veteran hard man Glen Johnson in the New Year.

"It was a satisfying and utterly dominating performance on Saturday night if I say so myself. Before the fight, the press and bookmakers were all split over the likely outcome between us." Said Froch from his Nottingham home.

"Arthur Abraham was seen as someone with a fantastic defence which was only bettered by his heavy hands.

"But I knew that if I could blow the cobwebs off my boxing skills and stay focused, there was simply no way he would beat me. I needed to make a statement and I think everyone will agree that Saturday's effort was exactly that.

"I'm so proud to be wearing the WBC title again around my waist and I want to say a big thank you to all of my fans who made the effort to brave the sub zero temperatures and spend money on coming over and supporting me.

"It was great to meet so many of them and I hope that they enjoyed the beating I put on Abraham as much as I did.

"My twitter and facebook pages have been overwhelmed with good luck messages and congratulations and it makes the weeks of hard work all worthwhile.

"The support of David Haye and so many other British boxers has touched me and it's also nice to be recognised by the press and boxing journalists alike.

"Whilst no love is lost for Kalle Sauerland, I must take my hat off to Arthur. He is a good person and a popular fighter who can come again. I gave him some stick during the build up, but the reality is that he is a quiet, honourable and likeable man. I had some verbal sparring with him and his coach Uli Wegner but we made peace afterwards which is what our sport is all about.

"Next up for me is 'the road warrior' Glen Johnson.  The man who put Roy Jones junior's lights out. He has been campaigning up at light heavyweight for a few years against elite opposition.

"He is a rough, tough handful and I will not be overlooking him.

"But right now I'm going to spend quality time with my family and loved ones over Christmas. I'm looking forward to eating a mince pie or two and maybe even a small glass of red wine. But most of all, me and Rachael celebrating our beautiful son Rocco's first Christmas.

"I wish you all a fantastic festive holiday and a happy New Year

"See you in the January sales!"

Carl Froch

Let's hope Adam Smith gets his way and we see him on Sky....

When you look at the Sports Personality of the Year nominees it's sickening he's not on there. More personality and talent than most of them.

He boxed brilliant, and I bet it must have been an absolute pleasure to put one over Kalle Saurerland as well.Glad to hear that him and Abraham made peace though.I like Arthur, he seems like quite a character.

Missed the deadline I bet.....
Worth a punt for next year if Sky snap him up and he wins the tournament.

Yeah -I think the deadline was last week sometime with the announcement this week - so he was 0-1 at the time for 2010. Hardly SPOTY material.

I put a fiver on Beth Tweddle and she didn't get nominate which surprised me.

If Khan had beaten Maidana then he could count himself unlucky this year.

I agree but for me Ian Hutchinson not only should have been nominated but won it, he did something which hasn't been done before and likely won't be done again sweeping 5 races at the TT, an occupation which requires balls the size of the moon and sawdust in place of a brain.

Sadly these things are not brought to the attention of the wider public mate

Terrific achievement that....

Nice to see Froch pay Abraham some dues. To be fair he never got that harsh on him. But there was definitely some genuine needle with regards Kalle's original handshake with Mick for the venue.

Makes you wonder what the scores would have been if it were in Germany with Tilleman and co?

It would have been a round, maybe two in Froch's favour at the very best. Maybe even a draw.

BIGMARK wrote: to be fair Gomez they could quite easily say the same thing about the fight being in UK after Dirrell fight. Now IMO Gemany is way worse than the UK for hometown decisions but that doesnt mean it doesnt happen. The right venue for the fight was a neutral one and all was good at the end of the day. I had Dirrell beating Froch on my card by the way by a couple of rounds and had Carl winning 11 rounds against AA with one being shared
Dirrell had a point deducted for constantly holding after receiving warnings in 4 consecutive rounds. So you had him ahead by a point ? That's fair enough - and it goes the same way of the judging i.e. it was a split decision.

It was a horrible affair and even those who thought Dirrell pinched it, were chuffed he went home with sod all.

It was certainly nowhere near or debateable as Calzaghe vs Hopkins. The first half of their fight, Hopkins kicked the poo out of Calzaghe and landed flush shots at will. The second half of the fight was an ugly messy affair, with Hopkins complaining, Enzo capitulating in the corner and neither man landing anything meaningful.

But fortunately for Joe, it went in his favour - but Haye, Duke McKenzie etc at ringside all said no way he won that fight and I agree. But Hopkins was a snake, whinging and complaining and all the "white boy" trash talking beforehand did him no favours. So nobody gave a stuff.

Froch never got dropped, never got his nose cut open and whilst they both landed the odd telling shot - for the most part it was falling on the floor, complaining and holding by Dirrell - so bollocks to him.

If Americans come and fight - instead of whinging, falling over and using gamesmanship then I'd pity them - but i got no times for cheats or cowards in the pro game.

To be fair to Joe, I think he had sussed BH out, and had they boxed again, Hopkins couldn't have improved and Joe would have won a much clearer decision.I also thought Kessler beat Froch, by 4 rounds, but felt if there had been a rematch, Froch could have made the neccesary adjustments to win.

Also, I do think Hopkins would have tied Froch up and beat him at a canter, if they had boxed.

Dont get me wrong i am happy that Dirrell didnt get the shout because IMO he was a disgrace yet i score the fight as i see it and had him winning. Hopkins-Calzaghe was a nasty fight to score but for my sins watched that fight 3 times and each time came out with Calzaghe winning by 2 points and i re-watched the fight with no sound. The scoring in boxing is objective and there are no real guide lines so it's down to personal opinion
i watched hop vs jc 3 times....first time i had it for b-hop....

second time a draw..

third time for jc.

:o

but my initial instinct was that b-hop had it in the bag.
