I met Alan Minter at the Boxing memorabelia fair in Hammersmith a couple of years ago.

He is the rudest most obnoxious man I have ever met.

I was talking with him in the car park of the Novotel and Minter said to me why dont you fornicate Off, youve never been Middleweight Champion.

I replied your a sad old man, and I for one am glad that Tony Sibson kicked the shit out of you.

Minter said fornicate Off, but left it at that.

I enjoyed it when Najib Daho was interviewed by Gary Newbon on "Fight Night" back in the late 80's. Newbon had a reputation for being hard on fighters, and was not well liked in the trade. Najib didn't speak great English and must have heard other fighters and Jack "Daniels" Trickett slagging off "Newbon" and assumed Newbon was his first name.
Because at the end of the interview, Daho said in his broken English, "Thank you, Newbon!"
It was spontaneously hilarious.

Minter and his dad hospitalised a German security guard at the Munich Olympic village in 1972. Minter nearly got sent home, and the story was hushed up.

I couldnt watch the Colin Jones / Milton McCrory fight due to laughing because of Minters commentary. He pronounced McCrory's name as Me-cory.

Minter was only ever champion because Hagler got shafted in his first fight agaist Antefuermo, otherwise he would have got battered in his attempt against Hagler.

Minter's attitude is a complete disgrace, and he is rightly noted as nothing more than a footnote in boxing history.

I do respect Minter the boxer - a truly hard man and an excellent boxer too. Went over the America and won a real, undisputed title ( even if he did bring his own judge with him ).
Started out as a banger before they realised he was going to cut so easily, so switched to a slighty more cautious approach in his climb to the top.
And Hagler didn't exactly cover himself with glory in the 1st Vito fight. Marv always said he was robbed but Vito came on strong late in the fight to make it close, so a draw might've been the right result.

Minter outside the ring was a loose cannon though and he truly deserved the beating he took from Hagler that night.

No, it wasn't James. He said, "I'm not going to lose my title to a black man," and later stepped on the scales in union jack underpants. The nationalism was all too obvious at a time of real racial tension in most cities in England (there were riots a year later), and led to the ugly scenes of bottle-throwing after the fight. I wasn't at the fight, but Martin Creasey was there for Boxing News and said the atmopshere was racially charged to say the least. There was a lot of racial flak flying around before the fight. Kevin Finnegan was quoted in the press as saying Hagler refused to touch gloves with him in their first fight, saying, "I don't touch white skin." It's small wonder people got caught up in the hatred. I'll never forget what Martin Creasey told me. He said, if he had had a bottle, he'd have thrown it, too. That's what the atmosphere was like in the arena.
