Braehead Arena Tomorrow: Good, Bad and Burns

Its about time that Scotland had a fighter who could draw a crowd to Braehead. The nights when Scott Harrison had the place rammed with 5000 people were some of the best fight nights I've experienced. Now the Scottish boxing partisans have Ricky Burns bringing the good times back to Glasgow.
Its nice to see Paul Appelby back in action as the main support. I'm a big fan of Appelby, but he needs to show a bit more positive progression in his fight if there is to be any substance to calls for him to get a fight with Ricky. In my opinion, he's not at Ricky's level at the moment, and will need to have a nice little run of fights before there can be any serious considerations given to that match-up. Reversing the Martin lindsay loss would be a good start.
It is not nice to see Alex Arthur back in action on the undercard. His best days are long behind him and if he's still in the boxing for the money then its a shame. I've only ever spoken to Alex a few times he was always a very polite and friendly guy and I wish him the best, but with his recent weight fluctuations it just doesn't strike me as though he is 100% committed to the fight game anymore. If he is hoping to string some wins together and get a shot at Ricky Burns then I feel as though he's flogging a dead horse. That fight would go the exactly the same as the first, with the champion bossing his outgunned opponent for 12 rounds. Unfortunately for Alex he's not the champion this time around.
On paper it appears as though Andreas Evensen is seriously over matched in this fight, and it would be a smarter man than me to back him tomorrow night. In saying that, how many of you (billy nelson excluded

) seriously backed Ricky to beat Martinez when on paper it seemed as though he was being horrendously over-matched? I expect Ricky to be in incredible shape again and ready to put on a show worthy of the Braehead nights of old and hope for the fans in attendance that it is not going to be a early round blowout. I look forward to Ricky Burns re-invigorating Scottish boxing and thawing out the big freeze north of the border by putting the heat on Evensen.
'Mon Ricky Burns, intae him fae the start!!!!!!!

Ye agree with everything you said, should be a good night of action. It will be good to see Johnson on the undercardmaking his debut, he looked brilliantly suited to the pro game at the Commonwealth! Appelby should have to work his way to a title shot, SFW is a stacked domestic division so after tonight I would like to see him in with Walsh for the Commonwealth with the winner fighting Foster for the European. Appelby has massive potential and I really hope he fulfills it!

Like I said, I'm a fan of Appleby. Anyone who can battle through John Simpson for 12 rounds in only thier 12th fight must have something about them.

Does anybody know what fights Sky will be showing? I'm looking forward to having a first glimpse of Johnson as a pro and hope they show that one.

The shouldn't have any problems really. I got to Leeds from Glasgow in 4 hours yesterday. And it took me the same time coming back up. M6 was clear and getting to Braehead on Tuesday wasn't any hassle either. The problem may lie with fighters who have to fly in as Edinburgh airport has been closed for a few days.

Former British featherweight champion Paul "Chuckles" Appleby takes on Ghana's Joseph Laryea in a 12-rounder on the Ricky Burns-Andreas Evensen card in Glasgow tomorrow night.
Appleby looked a magnificent prospect at the age of 20 when he edged out the vastly more experienced John Simpson to win the British title two years ago. However, after one successful defence he was upended by the dangerous Martin Lindsay in Belfast in six rounds, after which he took almost 18 months out before returning with two solid wins this year, one of them a stoppage of the useful Mickey Coveney.
Now 23 and with a record of 16-1 (11), Appleby continues playing catch-up against Laryea, who holds the Ghanaian super-featherweight title and was outscored over 12 rounds by the highly capable Maxwell Awuku last December, a man who went on to give Liam Walsh an excellent 12-rounder here. To go 12 rounds with Awuku shows you that Laryea is no mug. The 25-year-old visitor, a pro at 16, is seasoned and battle-hardened enough to take Appleby the full 12 rounds, but the talented young Scot emerges as the winner.

Poor fare - only the main event note worthy. Presumably a lot of the tickets will be sold to the family and friends of the prospects on the undercard.

You think so billy? Initially when Ricky's commonwealth strap became vacant, I thought Warren would have put Paul up to fight for it. When Walsh ended up fighting for it, I thought it may have been possible that Appleby vs Walsh would happen but it looks like Ricky and Paul may face off in the new year.
I really hope Burns vs Appleby doesnt happen just yet - Paul still has years ahead of him and doesn't need to be rushed, Ricky has left the domestic scene and assuming he wins tonight, would love to see him battle against the cream of the division. A unification with Mzonke Fana at Braehead would be amazing!
Good luck for tonight and for Simpson's challenge in Belfast!

I really hope Appelby doesn't get a shot at Burns, sure it would be great for an all Scottish World Title fight but Paul really would not deserve it he's had 3 fights at SFW (including the one tonight) 2 against Journeyman and one against a Ghanian who lost for his domestic title now how does that deserve a World Title shot? As I said I would like to see him in with Walsh and the winner against Foster.
And agree with the post above Good luck to you Billy and John Simpson let's hope Scotland gets another British Title

Credit to Bennie for pointing out that Laryea was no mug.
