Joe Walcott. For a fella who turned pro at sixteen, he sure took his time coming to the party!

In the lower weights, I think of Kostya Tszyu &, among current men, Juan Manuel Marquez took a lot of time to develope into his own.

Nate Campbell, Ron Lyle &, to a lesser extent, Larry Holmes, could all be seen as late-bloomers, but all got a late start in the game, so it's more understandable.

Kostya?

The guy who was fighting 10 rounders by his third pro fight?

The guy who beat Juan LaPorte in his 4th pro fight?

The guy who, in his own words, says he was a better fighter at 35 than at 25? Yeah, the same...but what does Tszyu himself know, when you're here to straighten us all out, eh Collie?

Who is this, BTW...

^^^I guess this particular reminder of your Boxing knowledge & its obvious limits puts paid to your little diversion in this thread

Of course, the HW's will dominate this discussion (for three primary reasons), & Lewis is one of the most prominent examples. Like Holmes before him, he started late by professional standards, but he took longer still to reach his peak. I see Lewis as entering his prime under Steward's tutelage, around 1997 or so. That means he was past thirty & had been in the ranks for the better part of a decade before reaching his true peak.

"Fine wine, well-aged," as was Lewis' own paraphrased assessment.

Poor old Irene.

Self-proclaimed boxing expert and World's Greatest Doorman at The Pink Oboe.

"Sorry sir, members only tonight. Oh, it's you Rupert. I didn't recognise you with your trousers on. Come in, the festivities are about to start!"

Daniel Zaragoza. He was better as a 30+ year old which is very unusual for a bantam

All very good, but the question remains.

Still having trouble placing him, Collie? Image

What was the question? Am I willing to teach you something about boxing? Yes, of course. I have already offered you one on one sessions (not like the ones you have with Rupert) but you keep crying off...

Looks like Kid Azteca, Irene.

So, I got mine right.

Let's see how you go.

Who is this well known fighter? (I covered up his initials on his shorts).

Johnny Nelson.

Started off a total embarrassment, culminating in 2 of the worst world title challenges I've ever seen, against DeLeon & Warring (at least before Audley Harrison's 'challenge' to David Haye  ), but then he matured into a really decent cruiserweight who was very hard to beat.

Initally I was going to say Jersey Joe Walcott, but maybe that is the obvious choice.

Someone beat me to the punch her ehtough, i was going to say Steve Collins as well.

And Bernard Hopkins has doen exceptionally well since turning 40. :TU:

And maybe we could throw George Foreman and Vitali Klitchsko in there too.

How about Dick Tiger? He was about 30 and had been fighting professionally for about 7 years before he hit his peak.
Another would be Joe Brown. He was 30 and had been fighting as a pro for more than 10 years before he won the lightweight title.
