I've had a letter today from a debt collection agency saying I owe £80 as a car I previously owned has no tax and has basically been abandoned etc.

I put the car into an auction through a local garage about 18 months ago and have never seen it since. In this time I moved addresses and the chasers have been going to my old address. Then all of a sudden I get this fine.

After speaking to the debt people, I said I was happy for them to impound the car as it wasn't mine anyway! They have said that I am the registered owner, so I said if that was the case I'll have the car back and pay the fine (providing they tell me where it is), but that's not acceptable either.

Anyone had anything like this or know of any way I can argue my point?

What you do with the debt people is never ever speak to them over the phone - get an email address or write snail mail and kept your correpsondence strictly via email or snail mail. When they ring - tell them you will only speak to them by written correspondence. What you tell them is what you have told us and that you will be happy to go to a county court to argue your case. They do not want this, they want to bluff you out of 80 quid (plus ridiculous costs) but as long as you keep your correspondence written and tell them you are happy to have a court date to put your point across - they will give up sooner or later - always remind them that you are keeping all correspondence for the supposed future court date and they will give up - they will harrass you by phone in the meantime though. Let us know how it goes on.

It seems you owe the DVLA who in turn have written off the debt and sold it on to an agency - you owe the debt collection agency nothing. Which is what you should tell them also.

The DVLA had better watch their step and back the fvck off
