derry mathews is back in title contension on jan,22nd liverppol olympia.against scott lawton albeit a minor tittle but a big step up,i personally think apart from rees,murray and maybe john watson that the lightweights are wide open for derry to come again,your thoughts????

Local man Matthews was stopped in six rounds by Lawton last year, after which he announced his retirement. It lasted eight months. "Dirty" Derry has won four out of five contests since returning in the summer and the strong, rangy fighter who once outclassed Stephen Foster Junior, now the European super-featherweight champion, looks more comfortable at lightweight.
Lawton also retired after failing to make it past the first round of Prizefighter super-featherweight last month but it lasted five minutes, and the man who once went in with Amir Khan in front of 2,000 of his own Stoke supporters, admits he is "skint" and fighting just for the money.
Nevertheless, Lawton is also more comfortable at lightweight, and always keeps himself in great nick, and in a long, hard fight I fancy him to do the double.

Not really, he said he won't be renewing his license next year when it runs out in May and i expect he'll stand by that. Scott knows he's at the end of the line, but a rematch with Matthews makes sense while he counts down to the end of his career.

I watched him beat Derry before and in all fairness after a couple of close early sessions where Derry's flighty style proved awkward, Scott hurt Derry and kept blasting till the referee stopped it. Even early on, it always had the matter of time feeling. And even though we all know Scott isn't a puncher, he knows he has the power to put a dent in Derry.

This rematch is being set up for Derry Matthews to gain revenge, its taking place in Liverpool and he has been on a better run while Scott got blasted away by Kirakosyan and then looked jaded against Sykes in prizefighter. But in a final hurrah, Scott will be ready to give his all. And with all due respect to Derry, he hasn't anywhere near the power of Kirakosyan or the ability of Sykes so its a very winnable fight for Scott to go out in a blaze of glory.

he has said, at least twice in the last 18 months, that he will retire after the next loss, doesn't want to keep asking the fans of Stoke to come out to watch him if he's only going to lose, etc etc. the first time was around the murray fight i believe.

Balconey mate,by far the better.when i boxed there it was bouncing and im sure it"ll be the same for derrys bout.He's a popular kid.
