He really ought to have thrown in the towel a great deal earlier against Calzaghe, who, even at that stage of his career with fcuked hands and a dicky back still hit deceptively hard, gave him an incredible shellacking for round after round.

I have no doubt that this is an old-fashioned case of one fight ruining a guy. You go back and watch how many head shots Calzaghe landed in that fight. It's pretty painful looking back, when you aren't awed by Calzaghe's skill.

It's all well and good saying "a warrior deserves the chance" but this is the flipside of that.

I think the argument can certainly be made. Obviously, the flip side is people saying Lacy was never much to begin with.

The truth, as ever, lies somewhere in the middle. Lacy was clearly never the 168lb Tyson that certain US media types wanted him to be, but he was no pushover before he fought Calzaghe. He was a capable fighter, who believed in himself. Calzaghe took that away within 5 minutes of the fight starting. That was a bout that should definitely have been stopped long before the final bell, even Gary Shaw could see that. I think Calzaghe definitely ruined Lacy's confidence that night. He may never have been as good as advertised, but he was certainly ruined by Joe.

Didn't Lacy also fornicate his shoulder up early in the fight against Tsypko?
