Christmas Cracker- December 18th 2010 – Liverpool fighters
By Jamie Albrecht
Next weekend at Wigan’s Robin Park Arena, three of Liverpool’s boxing hopefuls will be ready and
waiting to embark on yet another potentially painful outing in the boxing ring.
For Stephen “Georgie” Harkin and Terry Needham, the pursuit of professional boxing prowess is not
a new concept. For the latter of the three mentioned, the youngest of the Quigley boxing brood,
John, fighting for pay is unchartered territory. Quigley participates in his first contest against a fellow
debutant in Chuck Jones.
Despite Quigley’s considerable amateur credentials, (which included 3 national championships,
a commonwealth Youth Games Gold medal and a place on the GB squad for 2012) there always
existed a view from spectators following his amateur showings, that his style was far more suited to
a professional ring.
This perception, also shared with Quigley himself, will he believes, have a positive impact on the
outcome of his fight. “The way I fought as an amateur is not going to be too far removed from my
pro style as many commented on the way I fought as being professional. This has meant I have been
able to concentrate far more on strength and conditioning without having to worry too much about
adapting my style in training”.
Stephen Harkin will be looking to move even further towards a double figure victory count when he
goes up against the unbeaten Canning town Middleweight Costas Osben, whose developing record
is showing an early sign of promise. The last fight on his ledger was against another prospect, Dalton
Miller whose undefeated record was extinguished on points last month.
It would be an understandable assumption to feel that Harkin is approaching this fight with a note
of caution. The impending assignment appears to be having the totally opposite effect on Harkin
however; “The fact he’s unbeaten doesn’t bother me, I just want to get through the fight with a
decent win and look to go on to bigger things”.
Terry Needham will be hoping to avoid another blood soaked battle reminiscent of his debut against
Swansea’s Joe Smith when he engages with the experienced Andrew Patterson.
Whilst his last fight certainly delivered a number of thrills to the undercard, (with Needham suffering
a terrible cut to the left eye before putting down and stopping his outgunned opponent in the third)
supporters of the home fighter will not want to be faced with such a worrying experience again. It
will be up to Needham, along with the former fighters mentioned to ensure that Liverpool’s fighting
pride leaves the ring comfortably intact on Saturday night in Wigan.
