What happened to him on the eve of the 2002 commonwealth games is probably the most disgraceful thing to happen to any boxer within the amateur code. Basically, despite being the three time ABA super heavyweight champion, they dropped him last minute so Haye could take the heavyweight berth and allow their golden boy - David Dolan - to take the super heavyweight spot - the ABA wouldn't even allow a box off between Grainger and Dolan (who had never boxed at super heavyweight before) and Grainger promptly retired.

Why didn't he turn pro? He was a proper heavyweight and he would have done well or so I thought?

I always wondered where he went also. I was a superheavyweight boxer at the same time as Matthew. We fought twice, in the novice aba's, where i lost by 2 points, and then we fought in the England ABA's final in 2001. I lost by 1 point that time, and i had 4 points deducted. But he beat me fair and square, and he was the only man to ever beat me in the amatuers. Ive got both fights on tape, i'll try and get them on youtube soon. He was fit, with a good work rate and a good counterpunching southpaw stance.

how many fights did you have matt? what you up to now?

Bigped, i had 6 pro, won 5. I was doing well on my comeback in 2008, when i got a knee injury. But before that i had been making progress. I floored a couple of top ten British Heavyweights in sparring, but never got the big fights due to me having to quit down to my injury. Thanx 4 asking by the way.
