I can see on ESB that the British forum voters have polled Michael Brodie as their fighter of the year.

However, I'm wondering if the competition was polled now - how many would think Scott Harrison has actually had a more productive year.

Scott started the year on a high by destroying Wayne McCullough and answering alot of critics. He then lost to Medina, and the critics were then back at him (and rightly so).

A massive Harrison fan (Jim Watt) even said on Sky that he wondered if Scott Harrison is world class at all.

However, Scott has comeback well and has regained the title - stopping Medina in a tough contest. This showed that Scott can win at the highest level - cause Medina was in many peoples top 4 at the time (and deservedly so - he's bloody great).

Michael Brodie, on the other hand, hasn't suffered any defeats this year. However, he has only faught twice in 2003. The first time he was mightly impressive against Caberra. However, I am sure Wayne McCullough could still handle someone of that class with relative ease. Then came his classic draw with Chi, which most people thought he lost. I still think Medina is held in higher regard, and is still considered a better class than Chi.

Basically, what I'm asking is that if Robin Reid fails to beat Ottke or Hatton loses to Tacke, do you think Harrison should win fighter of the year despite his defeat.

My vote would still be for James Hare mind.

Interestingly Harrison and Brodie are so evenly matched now - I think its between them two for performance of the year. Harrison was brilliant against Wayne, and took everyone by surprise by the way he dominated him. Likewise, Brodie was scintilating vs Cabrera, he looked just about unbeatable that night.

If Hatton bombs out Tackie, or looks good in outpointing him, I would choose him as Fighter of the Year. I detest his WBU title, but there you go.
Otherwise, I would go with Brodie (he drew for the WBC title, which is streets ahead of Harrison's WBO crown), with Michael Gomez an honourable runner-up.

What about Woods then Bennie, didn't he do the same thing as Brodie but with the IBF belt. I thought you felt the Woods draw was fairer than the Brodie vs Chi draw.

Belts are important, but quality of opponent is the fundemental thing - thats why Hatton vs Tackie is such a pleasant match up. This is for the WBU belt, but if Tszyu retired tommorow it would be a worthy vacant title fight. So yes, if Hatton wins then I'd agree.

What about James Hare though Bennie, surely his victories over european level opposition this year is worthy of him being considered above Gomez.

Maybe Michael would recieve a special award - something like Comeback of the year.

Yeah I agree with bennie - I voted for Hatton, assuming he beats the man from Ghana that is!

Scott should've won first time round IMO, either that or pulled out of the fight if he was that sick.

Gomez, certainly comeback of the year.

I voted Gomez/Arthur fight of the year - but Calzaghe/Mitchell was pretty thrilling while it lasted - round of the year certainly.

Now I know you didn't mention Brodie in your last post - but should the same have applied for him against Chi. My main point is that Medina was ranked higher than Chi prior to his first fight with Harrison and generally considered better than Chi.

The fact that people assumed Harrison was that much better than Medina shows just how good a fighter Harrison is.... I'm not sure if that was Michael facing Medina in September the same thing would have been said. The fact is people gave a non top ten (according to Boxing Monthly at the time) fighter more of a chance of beating Brodie, then they did a top 6 fighter (again, according to Boxing Monthly) of beating Harrison.

Well Stu I think Chi wasn't ranked as he hadn't really done much since Morales.
But coming into the fight it was seen as a 50/50 affair - Mike did well to get out of that one in one piece.

I'd say Chi is a much tougher proposition than Medina, who's a pretty old man these days, and everyone knows he can be broken down if enough punches land. ( which was what Maloney was banking on first time round ) What were the odds for the first fight, 5-1?

But you could probably hit old Chi over the head with a sledgehammer and he wouldn't blink.

You may be on to something there Mighty Warrior, i would certainly pay to see Harrison-Chi in a sort of "Unification" match i mean seen as Chi is practically the moral WBC champion. I vote for James Hare as fighter of the year, he stopped Frans Hantindi in 1 who was considered a reasonably dangerous opponent then schooled Roman Dzuman who had fiddled Jawaid Khaliq along to a SD loss previously and then he blew away Jan Bergman in 2 which was arguably his most impressive win of the lot. Forget that strange match with Matolsci which he ended up winning by stoppage anyway he is my pick for fighter of the year as well Stu.
