JOURNEYMAN PRIZEFIGHTER!!

Just wondering about a "journeyman prizefighter" around about lightweight / lightwelter!!?? I think it'd be a blinder, 8 fighters, 8 good chins, 500+ fights experience! all the boys would fight their hearts out, it'd almost be 2 tournaments in one, prizefighter & the bragging rights among journeymen!! be great to give these boys something to fight for, a good payday, maybe the winner could get an area title shot / english / celtic / etc etc.
I train a journeyman so I suppose I'm biased but I really do think there are some good fighters out there & if it wasn't for the pressures of selling tickets on a regular basis some of these 'journeymen' would have had reasonable carears. it'd be so good to see them doing their thing and getting a fair crack of the whip when the scores are announced!! they are part of what keeps boxing going and some of them are seriously underrated, come on Sky / Matchroom let's give these boys something back for the graft they put in week in week out!!
some of the names I've been thinking about are as follows. let me know what you think!!
1. Johnny Greaves - 63 fights
2. Kristian Laight - 98 fights
3. Daniel Thorpe - 140 fights
4. Jason Nesbitt - 110 fights
5. Sid Razak - 60 fights
6. Carl Allen - 118 fights
7. Robin Deakin - 28 fights
8. Baz Carey - 59 fights
Sub. Ibrar Riaz - 20 fights
Sub. Yussef Al Hamidi - 39 fights
total fights = 739!!!!

Like it! But would the casual fan like it?

I think so, especially if sky sold it properly! let's be honest most casual fight fans have never heard of 90% of prizefighter participants anyway!! so if a bit of each boxers story was told I'm sure you'd get the casual fan on board. one of the best things about this "prizefighter" would be the fact that there'd be no mis-matches at all, I'm 100% sure none of these boys would freeze!!

I said to my mates a while back that this was a good idea. Journeyman are a lot better than their record suggest. Saw razak, Thorpe, Ibrar Leight and keatin live over the last 6months up here and most of them have been decent. I think Razak win the other night actully. Journeyman are promoters dream often saving shows abd never letting you down. Wullie Casey had the chance to fight for 32k aafter only 5 fights so if any1 deserves the chance to box for a good paydday its these guys. Would be interesting to see who would be bookies fav

I think it's a great idea and I'm sure we'd all welcome the chance of a very good payday for fighters who wouldn't normally get the opportunity to earn that much. However, I can't see Sky ever going for it as I think the quality of boxing would be quite poor and it would be a tough sell to the public.

It'd be mint for these lads to get decent notice, a touch of fame and the chance of very good money. I'd watch it and reckon that it'd be some show. They all know there way about and would really go for it. Say 'Hello' to your brother, Johnny please. His interview in Boxing Monthly was a great read; he came across really well.

although its a decent idea, why should guys who do not normally try to win suddenly get pole sky viewing and a golden pot of money?......im open to reasoning...

Top point Rhino 222

Mostly these guys are journeymen who have forgotten how to win and just survive. There is a chance that as soon as they hurt each other they will go into survival mode and it could make worse TV than the recent heavyweight one :OhYes:

Because without them, many promoters shows would be fooked, it's about giving these guys a bit of recognition but also it would undoubtably be very good viewing because this time they would definitely be trying to win.

as has been said these boys save shows on a regular basis, fighting sometimes on a few hours notice, they are the life blood of boxing, check all of the British / commonwealth / euro champs records & you'll find most of the names I've listed!! every prospect out there has been in with one two three maybe more of these type of fighters, they mostly always do a good job! as for getting hurt and going into survival mode, nah ain't gonna happen! most journeymen start in survival mode because they are there for one thing and one thing only, do the rounds! pure and simple do the rounds! give them a fair crack & let's see what some of them are capable of. I'm sure you would all agree that there'd be entertaining fights!

When you have 2 fghter fighting each other and one is so much better then the other the fight becomes booring, but these will be evenly match and know how to fight.. I was at a show where 2 Journetmen fought each other and it was the best fight of the night... But i can see what other's are saying, maybe do it for half the money and not on a prime fightnight, im happy watching more boxing on Sky :TU:

It's a great idea, these boys really do deserve their chance, to have a bit of the limelight, after all if it wasn't for them boxing would be in a lot of trouble, they're never going to get a British title shot so at least give them the chance to hold a belt up.
I saw earlier someone said two donkeys don't make a derby, but chuck 32 grand under these boys noses and you'll see competetive action, the other thing you have to remember and I know this as I train boxers in this position, is that they're at least a round down before they start, so unless they totally outbox or stop their opponent they're on a loser anyway.
Guys like Johnny Greaves and Robin Deakin and Duncan Cottier are much better than their records suggest, but once you're labelled a journeyman your chances of winning drop like a stone.
So whoever it's down to gives these boys their chance, it's well earned and much deserved.
