Im really considering taking up boxing in the new year, nothing serious just for fitness and self-defence but im really nervous about doing it as ive never been in a gym and im worried about how the other lads would treat me.I only got into boxing 5 years ago when i was 20 and i dont have any mates who are fellow boxing fans really, anyway i just wondered if you guys could give me some advice and tips about approaching it and overcoming my fear. Its not even the getting punched that im nervous about its just how il be received!Cheers fellas.

My advice to you mate is to practice your defence just as much as your attack. When you are shadow boxing, on the bags, pads etc. Rehearsal is the way we learn best, like driving when you have been doing it years it becomes 2nd nature. Us late starters have a lot of catching up to do with there ex-ams. Going through motions + drilling defence I think is more important than your attack. We are born with the ability to punch people in face, not to avoid or block a punch. I only realised this in the last 12month + my boxing has come on loads since then.

Mate I had exactly the same concerns going through my head when I first went to the gym 2 years ago, when I was 25 and VERY unfit. Trust me, you'll be glad you did it. Everyone has to start somewhere, and everyone in that gym knows that.

Honestly mate I haven't been to a gym were their was a bad atmosphere, usually you get good crack and a laugh with most people. Work on the fundamentals and your fitness first and you'll do fine ;)
