If an Alvarez-Senchenko fight is unable to be made, it looks like Hatton-Alvarez could take place. Is there anyone here who actually thinks Hatton could win that? I for one think he gets underrated and excoriated far too much on this forum, but I can't see him beating Alvarez. Not only would Hatton be outmatched in most departments, his style is made for Alvarez. Painful night for Matty if this fight is made.

I agree. I can't see the Hatton's accepting this fight, though.

Seems that Hatton might have accepted the fight.

Sources report that European welterweight champion Matthew Hatton has accepted a fight with hot Mexican prospect Saul “Canelo” Alvarez, possibly on March 5 at the Honda Center in Anaheim, California. Hatton was the second option after handlers of WBA welterweight champion Vyacheslav Senchenko allegedly rejected a $550,000 offer. HBO have reserved that date for a ‘Boxing After Dark’ show and there is also a chance of a bout between Michael Katsidis and Robert Guerrero.

Internet sources are reporting that Matthew Hatton, brother of the now retired Ricky, will face hot prospect Saul Alvarez in the States in March.
Hatton holds the European welterweight title and has looked good in recent fights but the same can be said of the unbeaten Alvarez, a stocky, red-haired Mexican who looks like Paddy McGinty's goat and certainly fights like a short-tempered Irishman as he wades into his opponents throwing hard shots to head and body.
At just 20 years of age, Alvarez is nine years younger than Hatton and hits harder than the Manchester stylist, although he failed to stop tough Aussie veteran Lovemore Ndou last time out, settling for a unanimous 12-round decision. However, Hatton faced the same Ndou in 2009 and was held to a draw, which does separate the two fighters.
Matthew is a nice boxer who puts his punches together well but he lacks the snap in his punches to really deter a fighter like Alvarez, who looks likely to force a late stoppage.

I like the sound of Katsidis v Guerrero it could be a right tear up as Katisidis' out and out aggression will back Guerrero and I can easily see at least a couple of knockdowns in this fight and I too can see a late stopage by Canelo.

Absolutely bazzingly ninja-tastic fight.
Good on Matty, he's gone up immeasurably in my estimation if it's true.
Not that I think he can win, but fornicate me does that show some nads. & Kats vs Guerrero? Great fight. I pray Katsidis does him, as well.

Good for Matty - he's always said he will fight anybody and wants to challenge himself against the best - and Alvarez is the best or so they say. Now we'll find out.

I'm a huge fan of Canelo. In my opinion, the kid is going sraight to the top. So fair play to Matthew for taking this fight, as it'll be a huge task, and a task I can't see him having much success with.
The only downside to Canelo's game is his poor defence, but Matthew doesn't hit anywhere near hard enough to really trouble him. Can only see there being one result, but nevertheless, it should be a pretty exciting spectacle.

Matthew's getting knocked out if he steps up to world level. Being rocked by Nuznenkho and the Italian light welter early doesn't bode well. He's improved, no doubt, but come on, his opponents have slightly glorified him. Although the Nuznenkho win was superb, so who the hell knows what will happen.

Hatton will earn himself some decent money and if he loses nothing lost really.
Matthew is not and never will be a world level boxer - he has done well proving people wrong by winning the European title but in doing so I feel he has massively over achieved.

This is a great move for Hatton. If he wins (don't think he will), great, but even if he loses he only needs to put on a good fight for the crowd and he won't be short of paydays from then on.
He's done well to win the European title, but tbh he's been a bit fortunate with his opponents (Branco was way over the hill). He's not even the best Welter in Britain, let alone Europe.

I'm with ya, Junior Hatton gets stick but the dude has put on a good few performances recently and proved he has some real bottle. I'd like to see him fight the exciting ginga ghost from Mexico no matter the outcome.

The fight between Saul “Canelo” Alvarez and Matthew Hatton on March 5 at the Honda Center in Anaehim, Calif., on HBO will be formally announced at a 1 p.m. news conference Friday at El Mercardo in downtown Los Angeles.
Alvarez, a rising 20-year-old junior middleweight contender, has been a sensation in his native Mexico and is trying cross over into the U.S. market. He is coming off a dramatic knockout of Carlos Baldomir in September and a one-sided decision over durable Lovemore N’dou in December.
Hatton, the European welterweight champion, has not enjoyed the success of his brother – the now-retired Ricky Hatton – but has fared well against solid opposition and is undefeated in his last nine fights, including a draw with N’dou.
Most important for Alvarez (35-0-1, 26 knockouts) is that Hatton (41-4-2, 16 KOs) has a recognizable name, which would give another victory a bit more weight.
“I believe Matthew Hatton has emerged from the shadow of his brother,” said Richard Schaefer, CEO of Golden Boy Promotions. “He’s put together an impressive streak of wins and is now the European 147-pound champion. He has been undefeated for quite a while. I think he’s coming into his own.”
Schaefer said he and HBO officials are discussing the possibility of Jason Litzau and Adriene Broner fighting on the undercard.
Litzau is coming off a stunning split-decision upset of Celestino Caballero in November. Broner, an explosive prospect, is coming off a first-round knockout of John Revish on Saturday.
Roberto Guerrero and Michael Katsidis were tentatively slated to fight on the card but Katsidis pulled out because of the floods in his native Australia.
The news conference is open to the public.

Massive kudos to Matthew Hatton if he takes this fight. Makes Kell Brook's slow progress of late even more frustrating though
One thing Hatton will have is that he'll know Canelo's style pretty well as it's pretty similar to his brothers. Not that I think he'll win but I wouldn't write him off completely. Would be such a nice surprise if it happens as I don't think too many of us felt he had the urge to test himself at a higher level
