PC1960-Destined 2 box?The Punching Policeman leaves the cops

I'd like to use this forum to let you guys know that I'm leaving the cops after 8years service to be self-employed as a personal fitness instructor and boxing coach. I'm going to apply for my trainers licence and help my coach Johnney Roye coaching some of the younger less experienced lads. I'll be doing private fitness coaching during the day and running fitness classes in the evening, I'm also studying Sports Injury Therapy which is quite a lucrative market and this will obviously help me on the coaching side of things.
Joining the cops 8years ago I was given the collar number 1960 at random which I just think is a bit of a spooky coincidence. Boxing has more or less taken over my life after starting to box for fitness just over 4 years ago and the number 1960 is emblazened on most Lonsdale clothing. Is it destiny?
Anyway I'm telling all you guys on here before I go on the works intranet and tell all the cops in Lancashire so I guess that kind of sums up my priorities now. I have for the last 12months been working in the training department which meant I was on Mon-Fri days but with cut backs and the stopping of recruitment it was inevitable that I was going back on shifts onto the riot unit. As much as I loved the job shifts just don't suit my family life or my boxing so I made the decision to fly solo.
I'm hoping that spending 10/12hours a day in the gym and teaching is going to improve my boxing technique and fitness to, so that will hopefully be an added bonus. I'll be able to train twice a day in the run up to fights.
So the Punching Policeman will be no more! 2011 is my year guys and I believe I can fight for some kind of title by the end of it. I'm fighting on the 20th of Feb in Preston as a home fighter, I'm going to make it my leaving do from the Police to so I'd like to think I can sell the tickets to cover the fight. Opponent is unconfirmed as of yet I'll keep you posted when I know. See you at a show near year soon

Great move Howard - at the very least you'll never have the dreaded 'what if...' syndrome. I suspect you'll never look back...

All the best Howard, but I think your move is a pretty mad one. The fitness industry is extremely competitive and has many two faced arseholes and blaggers. Of course there's some fantastic guys too. All the best- but sincerely i'd do anything to swap with you for a respectable career in the police.
Brave move- hope it pays off for you.

Id have liked to have had a go at it too , unfortunately never looked into it as i always assumed my childhood conviction would count against me , been told by my policeman MC recently that i might not have , oh well , thats life i suppose

Thanks Jeff, I may well be a bit mad but arseholes and blaggers I can deal with

I've done it for 8years and loved it to bits but I love fitness, teaching and boxing more and like I said working for myself will suit my family life better. Its going to be hard while I establish myself but in the long run I'll be better off.

My 8years contributions will be a bit of nest egg for me allready and I can transfer it to a private pension which I may do. To be honest though I want to build a business that will secure my future rather than hanging on for another 20years grinding it out. I love the job now but can imagine at 55 I'd rather not be there.

Fair play Howard. It takes balls to leave a secure, stable job to branch out by yourself. My dad wanted to do it, never did and has regretted it ever since. Best of luck.

I think going back to school and learning sports injury therapy is a great idea! Are you going to do it at Central Lancashire? There will always be work for you if you go down that route. Leaving a safe job at a time like this is risky but you are a guy that takes risks so there isn't anything that you are going to face that you can't deal with.

Good luck with it all Howard and keep training the dream.
