Lamon Brewster Retires. Career Thoughts?

He was probably my favorite of the revolving ABC champs of between Lewis and the Klitschkos. Certainly not the best, but very entertaining style, and he always seemed to come in shape.

His fights against Liakhovich and Krasniqi are borderline classics. And no matter how gassed or sick or whatever Klitschko was, Brewster put him on his ass and made him stay there. Then had the guts to get back in for the rematch even though he had to know what was to come.

I thought he was one of the good heavyweights to have around when the division was/is at its worst. I just wish he would have had a few more interesting matches against guys like Byrd, Ruiz, Toney, and a few others. It is hard to tell where he stacks up because his title defenses came against Meehan where he might have lost, Golota who was scared to death as usual, and Krasniqi where he came from behind. It is too bad he and Byrd couldn't unify when they held titles. I really would have liked to see how that turned out.

Either way he was one of the good guys. Polite and humble and didn't seem to duck anyone.

He was a very limited but entertaining fighter who was involved in some of the few entertaining HW fights of the past decade.

I'm glad to see he retired. But he would be extremely blessed if he doesn't end up with neurological issues later in life. He took a lot of beatings through his career, even in victory.

Yeah I hope he didn't wait too long as well. His 2nd fight with Wlad should have been his last payday. After that was just pointless.

The Liakhovich fight was brutal for both of them. Sergei was never the same either.

altho only 6ft1 Lamon was able to smash Klit because he could soak up extraordinary punishment -- had stamina -- and a KO punch.... simple really :box:

had some great title fights and will be missed.

cant help thinking Danny Williams might have beaten Lamon for the title when Kali Meehan fought him  discuss

Which begs the question, who was the best between Lewis and the Klitschkos? In terms of skill set, probably Byrd (not counting Jones as that was a one-off), but in terms of achievements, almost certainly Ruiz, as loathe as we may be to admit it.

I REALLY wanted that fight to happen. It would have been a classic. Two guys with amazing heart and recuperative powers, good power and ability to rally. But Brewster had much the better chin and that would have made the difference.
