Can anyone think of some old time fighters who are still alive and kickin'? I know Max Schmeling is approaching the century mark. and isn't Jimmy McLarnin still around? Jake LaMotta is in his 80s and fellow concrete heads Basilio and Fullmer are too stubborn to croak. Any others you can think of?

Yes, McLarnin lives in Pasco, Washington, the last I heard.

I think Willie Pep is still around.... last I heard he was said to be living in a nursing home... Harold Johnson is another who is living in nuring home and is in his late 70s I think......

I don't think it was Pep. Wasn't it Sandy Saddler or his brother who recently passed?

Max Schmeling looks like he is 60 years old, even his hair is still growing.

Yeah, Maxie certainly has an amazing constitution. To be not only close to 100 but still in such robust good health ... amazing.

Willie Pep is still around. he often said his main financial problem was caused by slow horses and fast women.

Sandy Saddler died some time back. can't recall just when.

there was an article on jimmy mclarnin in ring magazine a few months ago. his daughter said he wasn't capable of giving an interview, but in general was living happily.

jimmy bivins was found in almost skeletal shape living in thr basement of a relative...don't recall which one off hand so I won't say who it was here...and after he was hospitalized and given decent care he revived considerably and is still alive. (I'm basing these"still alive" comments on the notion that these would be well reported obits if thy passed.)

i still can't get used to the idea that johansenn and patterson are the next to oldest living heavyweight champions....as max belongs to such a long ago era. one reason, of course, is that joe louis held the title for eleven years....so there aren't any ex champs that came along in that time.

marciano's dying in a plane crash and ezzard charles's dying from ALS sadly kept them from reaching the golden oldie old timers.

this is an interesting thread and will have me thinking of alot of fighters i haven't heard about in years.

A follow-up on Jimmy McLarnin.
I was very fortunate to have seen Jimmy in person and shake his hand during the Summer of 2002, while I was doing a "road-trip" across the Pacific Northwest area of the United States.
Before I took this road trip, I had learned that Jimmy lived in what is known as the Tri-Cities area of Washington state.
So, after many hundred miles of driving, I took the turn in the road in the upper right-hand area of Oregon that headed me to the Tri-Cities, where I found the great Jimmy McLarnin.

Actually, I had been given only an address in Richland, Washington, for Jimmy. I managed to find his home. I knocked on the door, hoping that Jimmy was inside and would "tell me everything." Turns out this was only Jimmy's former home, said his son-in-law Jerry. Until about 2001 Jimmy was doing great --both mentally and physically. Then Jimmy became afflicted by Alziemer's Disease. So, from what I can gather, his family reluctantly housed him where he could get day-to-day and constant attention and care.

Jimmy McLarnin looks great -- physically -- from the very few minutes I got to spend with him.
