Robert Smith, the General Secretary of the British Boxing Board of Control, is the subject of a wide ranging interview into the current state of British Boxing, which is being aired on Hatton TV this week.

In the 40 minute conversation with presenter Nigel Turner, Mr Smith discusses the threat posed to the sport from unlicensed boxing shows and explains the reasons behind the introduction of Olympic style drug testing next month. He also says he believes that David Haye will eventually box one of the Klitschkos and expresses a hope that the BBC will consider a return to covering professional boxing once the Olympic Games have happened next year.

Some interesting points - the one I agree with most is when he says about boxers trying to preserve the "0" on their record. Who cares if someone is unbeaten as long as its a good fight? TV has a lot to answer for - we've had years of prospects fighting bums just so they remain unbeaten. Smith is right that it seems to be changing a bit but TV needs to realise us fans want fights, not some unbeaten bloke on a wave of media hype.

Not seen the IV - does Smith blame boxers for the fixation on being unbeaten or does he suggest other professionals within the sport can sometimes be to blame?

I think the point he was making was that promoters & managers have gone out of their way to pick and choose easy opponents in the belief that it will make their guy more marketable in the future. They're wrong of course because all it means is that they get to 20+ fights without having fought anyone decent. Sky should take some blame too for letting promoters get away with it. Good interview though, worth a watch.

Indeed they are, they show the BUI up as a bunch of rank amateur cowboys.
