'sheffields next world champion-kell brook'

Clinton Woods believes Kell Brook will be Sheffield's next world champion.

Sheffield's retired light heavy IBF kingpin regards the Ingle welterweight as " a class act" - and thinks he can exploit what he calls a "dying sport."

Brook, the 23-fight unbeaten WBO Inter-Continental champ, believes he is due a chance to compete at the level that Woods - and other Sheffield fighters like Naseem Hamed and Junior Witter - graced for so long.

Woods says: "Kell is class, he is so big for his weight it's unbelievable, really. He can be Sheffield's next world champion.
"Everybody he faces he just blows them away - and that, to be honest, is part of the problem.

"There are only a few truly fantastic fighters around in the whole sport. Manny Pacquiao is one at welter, but generally, in the other divisions - particularly at heavyweight, there are hardly any great boxers.

"Pacquiao won't fight Kell, it's not worth it for him. And that's the shame for Kell because we'd only find out exactly how good he is if he fights the best around at the time. Perhaps Kell would prove us all wrong if he ever did get in the ring with Pacquiao, but he won't get to face him because it's not the money-maker Pacquiao would want.

"But as an experience, it would be exactly what Kell needs. I had that sort of thing when I boxed Roy Jones Junior and he bashed me up (sixth round stoppage Portland, Oregon, 2002.) Kell beat Michael Jennings (last September) but that doesn't tell you the whole story. When the time came for Jennings to face somebody really good (Miguel Angel Cotto; 2009) he got annihalated. He found out how good he is, at that level. If Kell can't face Pacquiao then I hope he gets the chance against one of the other leading Americans, someone like Tim Bradley (who beat Brook's South Yorkshire stable-mate Witter in 2008.) He needs a really big test."

Woods, who hopes to open a boxing-fitness gym in Westfield soon, believes someone with Brook's undoubted fire, speed and punching power can succeed at a time when there are so many moderate performers climbing between the ropes.

"The sport is dying, as far as I can see. People don't believe me when I say that, but it's true. There is hardly any TV money available for boxing and the grassroots level is pretty dire, as far as I can see. The Audley Harrison spectacle (third-round KO by David Haye in November) was embarrassing - he was useless.

"I watched a film the other day of (former WBO heavyweight) Riddick Bowe boxing and that fight was amazing compared to what wee see now. The old boxers would laugh their heads off at what goes on now. As for the Klitschko brothers - they're past it. Haye would beat either of them. And there are no other heavyweights worth watching."

Really rate Brook, seen him fight up close looks class act.

My only problem is his opposition, only really fought Jennings thats top top donmestic level, all the others are welsh/celtic/area titles, or dodgy imports.

He looks good, but so does any decent boxer fighting at the level he's been fighting at. Didn't impress against his best opponent in Jennings IMO, but did against somene outside the top 400 fighting in the wrong division in his next fight. Needs to step up.

Sheffield legend bigs up Sheffield fighter in Sheffield newspaper........no surprise.

Some good points from Clinton though, Brook does need to step up as he is nowhere near world class at the moment. With the guys he's fighting it'll be 2/3 years before he gets a world title shot.

He needs to make a dent on the world scene in 2011, starting with a Jennings rematch.

I knew as soon as I mentioned Brook you'd be right on my tail :)

He should bloody rematch him, a devastating performance vs Jennings - after an inconclusive and unsatisfactory performance last time out - would get people talking about him and shut people like me up!

Seriously.....a lot of people want to see that, and Mick deserves it too

If only he was with Warren, then he would be selling 9,000 tickets for a British level fight in his hometown.

I'll reserve my decision until he fights some above British level.

I firmly believe Kell Brook is going all the way, I've been saying it for years, I paid attention to him many years ago when Stephen Smith pointed him out to me!! We were kids and he said watch him he's class, I've been a fan ever since ;)

He is good and looks to have the ability but how many times has that been said about a fighter? And when stepped up in class they aren't the world beater everybody thought they were going to be.

Incidentally, Denton Vassell is fighting an unbeaten african who soundly beat Brook's last opponent. I like Brook and I believe he can go all the way. But he really needs a step up in class. One of following opponents would be ideal as a bridge to world class:

David Estrada

Alfonso Gomez
http://boxrec.com/list_bouts.php?human_ ... &cat=boxer

Rafal Jackiewicz
http://boxrec.com/list_bouts.php?human_ ... &cat=boxer

Lovemore Ndou

http://boxrec.com/list_bouts.php?human_ ... &cat=boxer

Souleymane M'baye
http://boxrec.com/list_bouts.php?human_ ... &cat=boxer

I could go on and on.... I mean there's plenty of good opponents out there. No need to be beating up unknown africans. If the Hattons can get Ndou over for Matthew Hatton, I'm sure FW could do the same for Brook.

Totally agree and i can confirm that Kell is desperate to move onwards and upwards. He has no desire to fight anyone other than serious, credible opponents. Watch this space as i know Frank W is hoping that this is the year he wins a world title.

Brook can look devastatingly powerful and accurate against the right opponent; someone in the top 10 is likely to be less accommodating and more inclined to throw hard shots back. I don't think I've seen Brook hit hard once yet; that is certainly due mostly to his skills and that most have been intimidated by his power. At world level he may get exposed; to box for, and expect to win a world title a boxer surely needs to have beaten some talented, ambitious and hard fighters - that's before a title shot. A title shot by getting there 'the easy way' is dubious to me. (Though if he were to be gifted a shot at Berto he'd be mad not to take it; in the meantime he's got to prove he belongs in with the champs).

Kell is only ranked by the WBO and Pac is highly unlikely to take a mandatory against him so if he vacates Kell would need to fight Mike Jones or perhaps even Alvarez. Jones is 6ft with a 23-0 record and 18 KOs.

1 Kell Brook (Int-Cont) GB
2 Mike Jones (NABO) USA
3 Saul Alvarez MEX
4 Vitaliy Demyanenko (Asia-Pacific) KAZ
5 Shane Mosley USA
6 Joshua Clottey GHA
7 Diego G. Chaves (Latino) ARG
8 Ed Paredes (Latino Int.) USA
9 Samuel Columban (Oriental) (WBO Africa Int) CAM
10 Bethuel Ushona (WBO Africa) NAM
11 Paul Malignaggi USA
12 Shawn Porter USA
13 Rafal Jackiewicz POL
14 Valeriy Brazhnyk UKR
15 Gumersindo L. Carrasco ARG
