Stallone going into the boxing hall of fame. joke right?

Im going up to see the Mighty Mike Tyson get inducted into the hall of fame in the summer, and to my surprise Stallone is also going in. I love Rocky as much as the next person but it kinda makes a mockery of the whole thing. Any views on this?

The character 'Rocky' has arguably done a lot for boxing, maybe that's why!?!

How is it any worst than a Journo getting in? Rocky, penned by Stallone, got more people into the boxing than any scribe and most boxers.

As a non fighting member, I think it is richly deserved.

He is not the only movie maker in the HOF. I think the writer (or producer) of Somebody up there likes me is in also.

Spot on! How many kids got into boxing off the back of the Rocky films? I'd say quite a high percentage!

Glyn Leach posted on this a while okay. I think the fact Stallone did everything for the character, wrote it and starred in and directed 4 of the movies - means he should get in. When it comes to actors like Mark Wahlberg (no matter how often he says he begged for the role) or Robert Di Nero - then its a stretch.

But for Stallone Rocky was a bit of a labour of love also.

it's allright aslong as he scream's out adriaaaaan

it's the penultimum underdog :!: a great story :!: the greater story is how stallone was scripted out & he wanted to play the part at all cost's with bigwig's dissaproving. he sold his dog which is in 2 & bought it back for 10grand which was like 100k back then.

How come? It's good to hear both sides of the argument.

I absolutely think he should go in - rocky did almost as much to promote the sport in a largely positive way as anything or one before or since

Rocky = Boxer/Boxing, and is known worldwide due to Sly Stalone. Maybe they should have a HOF for services to the sport.

I don`t agree with him getting into the hall of fame. It kinda cheapens the whole thing in my eyes.

Just because lots of kids turned their attention to boxing after watching the Rocky films means very little to be honest. Will Stallone ever be awarded a top American military medal just because his Rambo films turned alot of kids onto the armed forces?
No. Of course not. Because that is just silly. But thats what the hall of fame has done ..

The non-participant category is described on the IBHOF website as for "Those who have made contributions to the sport apart from roles as boxers or observers. Based upon a candidates achievements and contributions in their particular field"

Stallone's contribution to boxing with Rocky was huge, and the fact that the series was so succesful suggests that it was a great achievement. So he deserves his place IMHO.

How is it different to a journo or a commentator getting in.

For the obvious reason that Rocky was a ficticious film ... The commentators & journalists report on real events.

The New York Times did an obituary for Hercule Poirot the day he 'died'

Well as already stated Rocky has had a massive impact on the popularity of boxing for young kids, I think it was Brendan Ingle who said you could always tell when a Rocky film had been on the night before because the gyms would be busier than usual.

However I don't think anybody other than actual participants in the sport should be allowed in the HOF but seeing as there are numerous journos in there I'd have no problem with Stallone being in it. In an ideal world though you wouldn't have it.

... what started out as a great idea initially. Is slowly turning into a farce.

It won't be long before inductees are not just the greats, but also the average belt holders will get in as a norm.
Already fans are complaining the quality is being watered down. Maybe Stallones entry is an attempt to please a certain genre/age??

For me. Only the elite boxers/fighters and outstanding or the colourful managers, promoters, trainers and cuts men.

An actor in a boxing film does not deserve a place in the boxing hall of fame. The Oscars are hardly going to repay boxers for their acting during a fight are they?
" and the best actor goes to ..... Andre Dirrel. For his performance against Arthur Abraham"

I remember reading that attendance to the hall of fame weekend has been declining in recent years. Is Stallone being given a place anything to do with this?

His place will be welcomed, even expected, by a certain type of boxing fan. You only have to read this thread to see that. :-?
And I am very very glad I do not fall into their category of boxing fan :TU:

Will Mark Wahlberg or Christian Bale be getting in if their film proves popular?

What do you mean by "a certain type of boxing fan"? What is wrong with thinking a person that has done a lot to promote the sport of boxing is worthy of a place in the Boxing Hall Of Fame?
tonyevs wrote:Will Mark Wahlberg or Christian Bale be getting in if their film proves popular?
Stallone wrote all of the Rocky films and directed Rocky II, III, IV & VI. That is a bit different than just acting in one boxing film, isn't it?

After reading all the posts and both sides of the argument ive made my personal decision..........let him in!

Ricky Hatton is one example of a fighter who got into boxing because of the rocky films, and kickboxing earlier on because of Bruce Lee.

Yeah sod it why not let him in lol
