This is disgracefull. This is Irelands biggest fight since Bernard Dunne got knocked on his ass and RTE are refusing to televise it. They're claiming they won't have the money to broadcast yet they broadcast any old stupid shite every day of the week. They broadcast the Euro amateur boxing finals yet not a world title fight? They run a boxing show once a month yet not a world title fight? They hang onto Andy Lee's nuts for all the bums he fights, they made Dunne seem like Muhammad Ali when he fought yet now all of a sudden they don't have the money to show a title fight even though they're getting it for free? The whole country will watch this fornicating fight this makes no fornicating sense, it isn't justifiable. This makes less sense then when they decided to broadcast Bernard Dunne's title win on the same night Ireland won the Six nations.

Oh wait he's a traveller, it makes perfect sense now.

Look if you're Irish (or aren't) please email the following address requesting for the fight to be shown. Approach them as you wish but I for one am going to accuse them of racism. Emailing could work. It isn't a very active complaint line here if we get enough people to request it they're bound to notice. As far as I know they have to reply to every email.

The head of sport for RTÉ, Ryle Nugent contacted the same website to explain why they can't show the fight. Numerous people have already emailed him regarding the matter. He explained that if the promoters shared the broadcasting fees, RTÉ would show the fight: http://irish-boxing.com/stories/februar ... y_row.html

As far as I know, there are talks ongoing with TV3 and also Setanta about broadcasting the fight.

It would be a disaster if it wasn't televised but it will be picked up by one of the broadcasters in my opinion. To be honest, I doubt it is anything to do with Willie being a traveller.

Thats abit of a strange one, broadcasters normally pay to show the fight so having the promoter pay a certain amount is abit bizarre

That's the whole point of it - RTÉ have no money to broadcast the fight so if the promoters can cough up the production fees, they will provide the platform, cameras, commentators etc.

Yeah but what does the promoter and the fighter get out of it except from the exposure? They wouldnt be getting any revenue from it though surely!

Exposure is all but if they want the fight to be shown badly enough...

Anyway, it's obvious RTÉ aren't interested so hopefully Setanta or TV3 pick it up.

Yes it is a big fight but the fact everyone is blaming RTE is crazy. Dolphil has made some awful decisions for this card.

I'm not too sure of the politics involved but RTE have pushed hard for lesser fights than this. TV3 won't take it most likely, when have they ever shown boxing matches. I don't think they show any sport other than football. It's RTE's obligation to show this fight, not another stupid soap or reality TV show. I just won't believe they're strapped no matter what the demands are.

I'm going to say Willie is outclassed in this one though. He does have a strong punchers chance which will make the fight interesting.

TV3 have shown boxing before. I think one of Macklins fights was broadcast in the past. In saying that though, they did a piss poor job of broadcasting. RTÉ used to have a budget for "other sports" which is obviously not there anymore.

Setanta are showing the Magee - Bute fight on the same night so maybe they could branch out and show a boxing marathon on the 19th of March.

Was it Jamie Moores Irish title fight that they showed?

I think they also showed Hyland bill in the Basketball Arena as well - which was a bit of a disaster.

Possibly, I really can't remember. I thought they showed Macklin - Elcock aswell, could be wrong though.

I am sure that was SKY. Peters wouldnt be having his fighters on TV3 with the relationship they have with RTE.

True. I think you are correct with Moore - Healy being on TV3 though. Two of the Hylands were on that bill aswell and it was in Tallaght.

Elcock vs Macklin was on ITV in the UK - it was a hennessy bill.

Sky had Barrera vs Khan PPV that night. I'm pretty sure they gave away the Macklin result during the bill.

TV3 showed that card. It was Paulie Hyland / Marc Callaghan and Jamie Moore / Ciaran Healy that were televised. Pretty awful card in front of an empty National Basketball Arena.

Many of us, myself included have written to the head of sport in RTE. While it is unjust and hugely dissappointing that RTE are not showing the fight they have been curtious enough to reply to each post and explain their current position. RTE's finances much like the rest of the Country are banjaxed.
Accusations of racism is deplorable, you are wronging the individuals and the organisation, it does no favours for Casey but rather debases his good character by association with such a plot.
Efforts are still ongoing to have this fight televised and the Promoters may yet go as far as paying for the broadcast.

update on this, there's a growing campaign for this and it really looking like RTE are lying through their teeth:

Irish politicians voice opinions:
http://www.boxing-ireland.com/20110204_ ... ms_36.html

When told by Boxing-Ireland.com that the state broadcaster claimed they could not afford it, Deputy Martin responded by saying that was not the case.
"Oh, they can well afford it. Believe me, they can well afford it," he said.
Deputy Martin joins growing criticism of RTE to decline the fight, even though promoters Don O'Leary and Gary Hyde have offered it for free.

Mayor of Limerick, Cllr Maria Byrne, called the decision "unbelievable" and "astounding". The Fine Gael councillor told the Limerick Leader: "I am astounded that RTÉ has decided not to show what is set to be one of the greatest bouts ever to take place in Ireland, with Willie Casey up against a former Olympic medallist.

"The fact that the title bout will take place in Citywest in Dublin, just a stone’s throw from RTÉ, makes the decision even more unbelievable. I am calling on RTÉ to reverse its decision and to show the fight live."

Cllr John Gilroy, who is strongly tipped to take a seat for the Labour Party in Cork North Central of which Gary Hyde is a constituent, said he would be lobbying to have the fight shown.

"The idea that RTE doesn't have the finance to show the fight is embarrassing. Willie Casey has been an inspiration to thousands of young people around the country and the idea that they will miss out on what could be his crowning glory is mind-boggling.

No, they're a bunch rascists and liars too. Their finances aren't banjaxed. I don't know how anyone could actually accept that as an excuse.

I wouldnt be thanking RTE to be honest - they are showing 3 back-to-back rugby matches and making DolPhil pay for the privilege of airing a world title fight!!!

I ain't thanking them. The fight deserved to be shown nationally and I'm happy it finally is, one way or another. Hope it doesn't set a precedent with regards the promoters having to pay for their fights to be shown.

why all the fuss? it's a poor fight for a bogus title....casey won't last two rounds. it's a waste of money with a clown show thrown in to boot if someone starts parading any imitation world titles around.
