I rermember late 80s early 90s in my area we used to have a Norfolk championship winners used to go thru to eastern counties&box the suffolk, mid anglia&essex champs poss two fights in 1 night there..if they won that then face the winner of the.home.midland or southen counties,if eastern met southern they would face the winners of home or midlands counties for a place in the old english semis....Going back to where i started the county finals Norfolks there used to be maybe 3 or 4 boxers a weight apart from the lower&top weights&the county finals used to be a big night on the own.. i got invited to the last norfolk championships&there was 2fights all the other weight were byes....Bring back the George Wimpey days

I'm pretty sure Armour was later eliminated by John Lyon that year, the year Lyon set the record for the most ABA titles won by an amateur boxer (seven).
Lyon later made it eight.

Mickey Driscoll - the same guy who boxed pro? He's now a very well regarded coach at West Ham ABC.

I feel your pain lads. I am living in Ireland and while the amateur game in Ireland is on a high these day I still must admit that the whole sport of amateur boxing at its highest level is now very tap and run. It is like fencing. Bodyshots are a waste of time unless you mean to stop a man with them, because you will never get a point for one. You could land hooks all night and never get a score. Its a case of jab, jab, jab and maybe a cross twice per round.

Command of the ring and aggression are no longer taken into account.

I know pompey isnt a hotbed for boxing but what a pile of shit the amateur game is now its like fencing. people trying not to get hit rather than hitting themselves shit atmosphere shit rules shit buzz shit reffing shit everything unless you have a chance of winning an area title i just dont see the point in it. there was hardly anybody at either show where as literally every white collar show i have is sold out the amateur game really needs to do something to jazz it up the atmosphere at my shows is incomparible (is that a word?) to the pile of shit i have seen at them shows. i now know why loads of ams are turning to white collar they get paid they have a proper tear up and the adulation they get for winning a white collar bout compared to boxing for a trophy in front of 200 or so people who barely shout a word in the ams. its really not the amateur game i was in many moon ago the amateur scene really needs to shape up RANT OVER!!!

Laugh i know Billy I went to to local shows last week pile of shit
