IBO cruiserweight world champion Danny Green is considering retirement as he struggles to regain full fitness following recent surgery to remove his appendix.

Green, who underwent emergency surgery in early January after an abscess the size of a softball was discovered on his appendix, has resumed light training.

But he remains unsure whether his body could still stand up to the rigours of professional boxing.

The 37-year-old said there was no timeframe on when he would make a final decision on his future, saying only that he still held out hope of a return to the ring.

"I've just got to wait and see how my body holds up," Green said on Tuesday.

"The desire to fight is there but I really don't know whether I'll be able to.

"The doctors have left it up to me.

"They've advised me to just see how I feel and really the ball's in my court.

"I'm not going to make any stupid decisions.

"If I can go on I'd like to, if I can't, well then I'm a realist. I realise that it wouldn't be easy to just walk away from it but I'll have to do what my body's telling me to do.

"I've been doing a little bit of work in the gym but I honestly don't know the immediate future of my boxing career ...

"(My trainer) Angelo (Hyder) and I are just keeping the eye in, doing a bit of pad work.

"I always like to keep physically fit as much as I can, but I'm not able to train as much as I have been.

"I've only just started putting a bit of weight on. I'm just going to play it by ear."

Although Green's been forced to the sidelines, the West Australian is by no means idle - he's organising a Next Generation fight night at the WA Basketball Centre on April 15.

West Australians Matt Garlett, Pieter Cronje, Steven "The Surgeon" Wills, Clint "Hammer" Hosking and Victor "The Destroyer" Oganov will fight on the night in an event Green hopes will lift the profile of boxing in the state and help build the career of an up-and-coming fighter.

"It's always been a plan of mine to let other fighters be able to progress and take over from where I left off (and) this is the first step in doing it," Green said.

"If I can get the people who have supported me to come on board and see these blokes giving all they've got ... that's the plan to keep the following going and keep the sport of boxing growing in a positive way."

Green's last fight was on November 17, when he defeated American BJ Flores in a hard-fought unanimous points win in Perth.

He has not said he is retiring. From memory a champion gets 12 months to defend his title. That gives him over 6 months from now to get fit again.

i would really like to go to at least one more green fight. i cant think of anyone person that gets the crowd going like green. Its electric when the vegemite songs starts everyone goes besurk.

he could retire pretty comfortably i reckon and still be active in the industry like he is doing at the moment.

but i would much rather see him come back have an easy fight to warm back up and then wreak
havoc on the rest of the cruiser weight division . i really think he could/could have got at least one more belt. im sure i seen steve cunningham say on a facebook post that a fight with green in oz is one that he would take.

Like everybody else would love to see him fight on, but honestly if he is not sure his body will handle it, he should hang em up, would hate to see him get hurt...

I would rather he actually challenges for a real world title against a real world champion, before his career is picked to pieces, should he retire now.

A lot of questions still need to be answered about how good Green really is! I've followed him from beginning to end and would seriously consider taking down his photo frame in my man room and put it in the bin.....no more fucken around Green, i've given you an awful lot of money, now i want to collect, challenge and fight a true champion or forever be known as a pick at the bones fighter.

I know he fought Flores,Drews and co , but fark you way better than that, and an appendix isn't a career ending injury you soft prick.

My Body's been thru hell, my body's been thru hell, what boxer or athelete hasn't, stop whining and get in the ring with 1`of the alphabets and shut these pricks up, or suffer the consequences of the legitamcy and questionability over your big victories and be classed in Mundines catergory....it would really infuriate me if he were to leave on that note, your a boxer not a ballerina.

take no notice of it. boxers say stuff they won't do so they don't seem concerned having to fight a fellow fighter. if they say no, people will write that the boxer is scared to fight.

but yes u would hope green would fight a top 5 guy in the cruiser division or just retire.

Agree, he's promised some big names down here and has unlike some delivered on his promise, now it's the hall he should be trying to at least get a mention in, and a mention he can with a fight against Cunningham,Huck and Guilermo Jones.

Brute pull your head in mate, i agree with some of things you say but its purely a nationalism statement and you really read too much SMH, Flores showed he's not unbeatable, and personally i think given his age and this not being a weight he's fought at that much, any of those mentioned would jump at the chance.

Maybe Cameron is the fight to get the confidence back, but use it for a tune up against either of those fighters, but retirement isn't an option.

As a massive fan, I'm still not convinced and confident to say he's 1 of the 10 best this country has produced, i will say he's defiantly top 5 for electric atmosphere.

Houdini wasn't a boxer, more of a circus freak, and having people punch you in the stomach without being on Guard is stupid.

I say fark boxing if he retires again, because his story isn't anywhere near finished yet, and the Mrs needs another story on the house.

Mate, I've, as stated invested a lot of time in Green and spent money that most would consider ludicrous, i want to see him do what i know he can do, and thats fight the best.

I'm sick of excuses, and i know he's been crook but it certainly shouldn't be the end, thats more bullshit, i'd love to see more fighters like Katsidis from this country, just with a little better management and a better trainer.

I love my country, I love Australian fighters, but I've learn't to take a step back and have a look at the picture from a universal point of view, it's the same with the British Oliver, they've learn't not to come here and talk shitt and throw there weight around and try and talk down to us Australians, unfortunately you were pigeon holed as one of those.

Well that was always my counter - just because I wasn't unreservedly supportive of all things Australian did not mean I was a hater or a troll. Just saying what I see as a geographical neutral - and that includes praise where it's due, too. For example, I was one of Green's staunchest backers on the Current Scene when the commentary on the RJJ fight went from "Jones will whip him" to "beating Jones is meaningless" in the space of a day. Not to mention I'm one of Katsidis' biggest fans.
