Gary Jacobs has been banned from driving - despite trying to impress a sheriff with his glittering past.
Jacobs was disqualified for 12 months after twice refusing to take a breath test.
At Glasgow Sheriff Court, Bobby McCormack, defending, reeled off the highlights of his career in an attempt for leniency on behalf of the troubled ex-European welterweight champion.
He said: "Mr Jacobs is a former champion boxer, who won several titles in his time.
"During his career, he sold out Madison Square Garden in New York for a world title fight.
"He is appearing in court for an incident that has caused embarrassment to him and his family. He simply panicked."
But Sheriff Deirdre MacNeill QC said: "Unfortunately, I am unfamiliar with the boxing scene and Mr Jacobs will be treated the same as anyone else."
The 38-year-old was stopped in April after leaving Babaza nightclub in Glasgow at 4am.
A roadside breath test returned a positive reading but he later refused to take further tests.
The dad-of-three, of Newton Mearns, near Glasgow, pleaded guilty to failing to take the breath test last month.
Mr McCormack said Jacobs was now living on income support.

What a way to attempt to avoid punishment, he should be let off for trying it!!

Question for some of the more "seasoned2 (elderly ) posters.

Did Jacobs sound like that before boxing? He always sounds drunk/punchy to me?

But did he sell out MSG? I severley doubt it...His battel with New Yorker Buddy McGirt was at the Felt Forum, is that a smaller hall within the MSG complex?

Jacobs was excellent at Euro level and fought some of the world's best.
In this day and age his fights against Whitaker and McGirt may well have not happened, with Jacobs staying in England to fight for one of these minor world baubles.

No, he's definitely a bit slurred now. He was never like that in his fighting days.

Makes me laugh, you get 18 months minimum for a positive test, refuse to take one and you get only 12 months.

I don't really blame Jacobs for trying to use his past as an influence, i mean how many times do we hear the old "Do you know who i am?" line?! Whether he is on income support i not i am entirely sure of, i know Ken Buchanan isn't exactly rolling in it at the moment either. Those Scottish lads don't appear like they got paid what they deserved or spent it less than wisely during there distinguished careers.

The felt forum is in the basement of MSG, and is a much samller hall.

Guys like Mike Dokes and Edwin Rosario fought there regularly in the late 80's.

Jacobs sounded a bit Nasal in his heyday, but his speech is slower now.

Allegedly, he puts more than drink into his body these days.

As others have mentioned, he was an excellent fighter. I once saw him stop Jimmy Vincent in a round. Vincent had to go to hospital afterwards with a busted jaw.

There seems to be a strong pedigree for Scottish Boxers (not just I accept - but higher than average) to hit the bottle - i was just reading about (was it Benny Lynch?) a Jock fighter who drank himself almost to death WHILST STILL A FIGHTER - and a seriously good one to - supposed to be the 2nd best after Wilde. Buchanan too. More recently wasn't there another DUI?

Not meaning to be picky but as far as I know you are only put on Income Support if you are unable to work such as poor health or pre school kids to look after, sick relatives to care for etc. If you are able to work you are put on Job Seekers Allowence (JSA), Is Jacobs ill/ Or have I got it wrong? Just a thought.
