Steven Ormond - a real prospect

Just watched Ormond live for the second time at Braehead last night . If you ever watched Barry Mc Guigan on the way up ,then this lad is exactly the same .
Great ring movement , very hard puncher with each hand , listens to his corner , very fit.
I don't normally make rash predictions - but here's one . Ormond will win a world title . Trust me he's THAT good .

Only problem is, he's got Owen Coyle( the Bolton manager ) in his corner !!! ( you'll understand where I'm coming from if you ever have a look at his Chief Second ) the likeness is incredible .

He won every round before stopping Convey in the 6th or 7th. He does look good too be honest. His body shots were spot on last night aswell as his 4-5 punch combos. There was a intervew in the programme last night and he said he wants a crack at Burns because he thinks he'll beat him 4 or 5 fights down the line. And by the way that was owen coyle last night haha. Really did look like him

I've joined Steven's Gym two weeks ago and have been really impressed with him, extremely fit, very skillful and can punch as well.Pascal Collins is his Trainer, He does look like Owen Coyle.

Here's a clip from Sky Top Ten KO's of 2010 and Steven is at Number 6 Knocking out Sebastian Cornu with a Peach of a left Hook.

I just got off the blower to micky, he said to me, though he thought ormand was in front , it weren't that one sided. Although Steve landed clean a few times, he landed too. Frank, my brother done micks corner & said although almand was busier mick landed the better shots. For the record, I rated ormand, good little fighter

He was defo behind mate but ur right he did land a couple of big shots. Ormand is very busy (as you know) that's what was winning him the rounds. He seems to lack a bit of power by the looks of things, the body shots Convey took where good shots and it didn't really seem to bother him. He looked upset at the stoppage. Didn't realise how small he was

He is busy Doug, that's what I told mick. He knew he wasn't in front. He's no mug & he felt he deserved to at least go the distance. No, he don't carry much power but he is busy & a good shot picker. Matched well, Steve can challenge for titles. Is like to see it because he is a humble , hardworking, honest good pro.

I was going through Conveys record there and noticed that he boxed Steve Bell. He must have have away at least 6inches! Anyway good luck to him in the future. So what about Ormond, who do yous reckon would be a good match up for him next? Maybe a Martin Gethin or Gary McAurther?

He (ormond) is defo a decent little fighter who could maybe go onto title level, as for winning one I'm none too sure!! I was very impressed with the work he did do but more concerned about the things he didn't do!! also seems to lack real power! in this fight there was virtually no jab at all, he continually allowed Coveney inside where Mickey produced some good work of his own!! He needs to tighten up on the inside too although credit should go to Mickey who certainly deserves it for the way he worked when he was there!
As for the stoppage I thought it was an awful decision, the fight was always competitive, both were landing shots, ormond was defiantly ahead (59 - 55) but neither was hurt, both had slowed a touch and the fight was heading for points all day long IMHO!!
I must say it was a pleasure to work mickeys corner, he was switched on and always listened, didn't panic when cut & was fit as a flea. I honestly didn't see it as a stoppage & am very disappointed for the lad.

Covenney performed really well when he came over here to fight Pajo Hyland for the Irish Featherweight Title. Although he was eventually stopped he was running Pajo really close and put it up to him. Seems like a really nice guy aswell.

Ormond on the other hand has made a great decision to sign with FW. Hopefully we will get to see him back in Ireland soon. Fighting Covenney was difinitely a step up in opponent from what he was fighting previously.

when he was in new york di bella wanted to sign him i think
said hed have him as a world champ in two years
didnt think he carried too much power meself but done a job on cornu
frank the flaws you said he has are probably right but he has time to work on them and its only his 9th fight
coveney is great opponent for up and coming boxers always gives it a good go and looked alot better than his record suggest against pajo hyland last year

I dont think his missus settled in NYC, hence the return.

I wouldnt say he has massive power either but looked good against Greaves in the Kelvin Hall.

Mick Coveney gave Hyland and right good crack in Dublin for the Irish title and I am sure that this had the makings for a good match up.

Hopefully it will be stuck up on Warrens youtube channel soon.

I'm reading the comments . We all see fights differently , but I've got to say Coveney was getting well and truly busted up . I was ringside and when Ormond sat down on his punches they were pretty stiff .There would have been no point , other than personal pride , in letting Coveney continue .
Ormond STILL for a world title down the road .

I see what your saying mate but the punches were not really doing any damage. I was ringside also and heard the punches but at the end of the day thats what convey was there for, to give Stephen the rounds and test him. Stephen win every round for me but the stoppage may aswell came in the first than when it did, because the same thing happened all the way through the fight. Its not just Conveys pride that will be hurting, but also his pocket as the fight was stopped he will be out for at least 28 days without work.
I do like stephen but I think they need to step him up a level. Interesting to see who's next for him.
