obviously he's well known for that amazing multi knockdown first fight with fidel bassa (which he lost). and for being the first irishman to defend a world title 5x, i believe. and one of two ppl to stop baby jake matlala (with a big right hand). some pretty solid achievements, there.

watching bassa 1, the first knockdown of bassa seemed to be a head butt by mcauley. he swiung the right, which missed, and the head seemed to connect, putting bassa in massive trouble (though he'd drop/hurt bassa with great shots later).

was the 2nd bassa fight any good- never seen this fight.

apparently mcauley was down around 16 times in his career - presumably he's been in a few thrillers? what are the best bouts to watch, aside from bassa 1?

Two fights with Bassa, the two with Rodolfo Blanco (sp).

Without the benefit of performance-hampering headbutts, McCauley was beaten decisively in the rematch with Bassa. Excellent performance from the Colombian, much more indicative of his usual silky smooth, stylish boxer-puncher form.

He was robbed in the return with Rodolfo Blanco over in Spain. He was a tough, exciting fighter with grit, stamina, a hard punch and a suspect chin - but only Bassa kept him down.

so was he down 4x in the 1st blanco fight? sounds like an outstanding battle. obviously bassa 1 was so sensational that this is the bout he's always remembered for.

apparently blanco had a really good fight with myung woo yuh, down at light flyweight for the WBA title.

Penalosa proved a disappointment and was easily outboxed. Yep, Blanco dropped McAuley four times but was down twice himself and McAuley did enough over the whole 12 rounds to deserve the verdict, although the gracious Colombians stormed out of the ring. In the rematch, McAuley got shafted - plain and simple. He outboxed Blanco and definitely deserved to retain the belt, but was on Spanish-speaking territory.

how about mcauley in a british title elim vs bobby mcdermott? harry mullan said that was a really good fight. is that fight hard to get hold of?

McAuley broke his hands but showed typical grit to come through on the McGuigan-Pedroza card, although McDermott collapsed afterwards and there were worrying moments. It was a crossroads war between two flyweights for too little money.

It was at flyweight. Boxrec has it at bantam but both men scaled 7st 13lbs. Nope, it wasn't screened.

was reading an old boxing monthly. mcauley said the blanco robbery was even harder to take because:

he had a michael carbajal fight lined up for £3 or 4m!

The Beeb would have taped it but I don't remember them screeening it. If there is a DVD of the fight, I would like one myself.

The second Bassa fight was a comprehensive win for Bassa, the first fight was the finest fight I have ever seen.

Blanco was robbed of a win the first time in a big way so the second fight was natural justice.

And it was Paul Weir who was denied a big payday against Michael Carbajal and not McAuley.

The worst decision I have ever seen in the UK.

obviously mcauley had a hard fought, worthy career, some great fights, some solid defenses. and apparently didn't make the kind of money he wanted. and yet, ppl seem really lenient - he was robbed v blanco 2, but little mention of blanco 1 (other than it being another multi KD epic). he would have won bassa 1, if it had been 12 rds rather than 15. he was overtrained, and besides a novice anyway, so he lost bassa 2. and he would have made £4m (!) v carbajal, if he hadn't been robbed v blanco.

maybe after 5 defenses it was a good time to get out, given the weight draining he did.
