BM article on John McDermott

Just bought the issue - really enjoyed the article on McDermott. The writing was strong and not melodramatic like a lot of stuff these days. McDermott came across very well and I like the way he was allowed to speak.

It was a good insight on a very decent and underrated pro.

Well done Mr Mcneilly :TU:

Great piece, just read it Nice one Sir Ian.

I don't normally buy the boxing mags, but this was a pretty good issue. And if the queen didn't watch Big John take Larry O out, she should have. I've heard she likes watching a good tear up.

Reggae - for clarity - by melodramatic, you mean Boxing News, right?

Give him some Usman Ahmed dance moves and he'll be world famous :)

(It sounds as though John has a wonderful 'day' job; it really sounds fantastic; 'repairing monuments & statues; that is a specialist niche role and I imagine there's a hell of a lot of satisfaction to the job).

A vision of a sculpture of Big John McDermott has jumped into my brain now, & will probably never ever leave.

The article was very good. John seems a top bloke as well.

Ha ha!

Have to say Macho, you're probably right...however, I don't agree with your verdicts on his losses to Fury. The first one he 'won', I think - and that's probably the fittest he's been; the second the chap had glandular fever, as it turned out.

I also had him winning the first fight with Fury but it wasn't clear cut and ultimately it is a loss on his record. Had he been lighter and even fitter, it is likely the result would have been a clear win for John. On the second fight, I'm not going to call bullshit on his glandular fever claims but I wouldn't mind seeing a doctor's note. :DD
Ah, it's a shame people are so cynical... 8)

John is a good hard working pro and a much better boxer than want a lot of you give him credit for and will give of of Europe's or British heavyweight a good fight and would beat most of them

Not, not necessarilly - depends on the writers. Steve Farhood for BM is one of the worst writers with his hyperbole and awful attempts at 'comedy'.

And this sums up the argument about 'taste' - Farhood has been one of my favourites since I was a kid. I love his humour! Then again, I used to p*ss myself laughing at Eric Armit's columns due to all the nicknames but I think that was just me :P

I was at the Skelton farce (which was on the undercard of Harrison - Williams I :witzend: ) so it has taken me a while to warm to big John. Didn't know about his daughter, or the sculpting thing.

This kind of stuff is what I want from my boxing mags - interesting stuff about the fighters lives. That is where BN 60 secs interviews let themselves down as they are so generic and dull

I thought he was robbed in the first Fury fight. I had at least 3 rounds the winner. It was a disgrace. I'd like tae see him get a British Title shot again. He deserves it.

Ha ha - I'll never slag Brady off, even though a lot of his writing wasn't to my taste. One of the most hardcore boxing writers ever the way he faced down bullying. I remember him getting done for calling some South Pacific fighter a cannibal or something.

Is the issue in the shops now, or have others got it on subscription? Couldn't find it in any of the news agents near me.

Should be, I got it last Tuesday, so I think it would have been released a week ago.

I agree to a point. I have always defended John's ability at the same time as criticising his diet. He would stand a far greater chance of realising his true potential if he got into the best shape he could. He has never done that.
i sparred with john a few years back he is a very clever fighter all he was lacking was self belief but i think he's found that of late and i wouldn't be suprised if he went and won a british, commonwealth, or even a european title right fights at the right time ect ect
