Macklin/Gevor - Off?

Another site reporting this fight is off - Macklin going for a straight world title shot apparently.
Perhaps its Sturm but he has to ko him in Germany, still if Castillejo can do it, Macklin has a lot more pop than Javier who fought most of his career at Light-Middle I believe.
At face value not a good fight for Macklin but if you watch Sturm closely he has never really kicked on to become what he might have, I reckon he must have seen
the Varon fight and assumed this was a safe defence, don't think Macklin is out of this, could be interesting.

Hope he gets knocked out if he sacks it off for another fight tbh. Getting annoyed at the amount of boxers dropping out of cards.

Do you blame McCloskey for canceling his European title defence in Belfast to fight Khan then?

No but I'd be pissed if I bought a ticket. Second time Macklin has done it last few months and he was promoting it on Ringside last week. Didn't get Wright, wonder if he will even get this after letting people down again.

agree, scott, Macklin's career seems to have been all over the shop in the last 18 months or so.

It's only one paper report at the moment guys, but he or someone behind him is taking the p. "Contractual issues" being blamed and that's no surprise as he is one of few guys in Boxing that flip flops between Hattons, allegedly and Brian Peters. Needs to be signed up with one promotion in my opinion and considering he was on Ringside last week this is disappointing really.
Maybe Martin Murray will step up to face Gevor?

at least one middleweight with the initials 'MM' certainly needs to step the eff up, yes.

Mate, to be fair its been all over the shop since his defeat to Andrew Facey. It was humerous but also bang on the money when Adam Smith jibed Macklin on Ringside that Joe Gallagher was something like his 18 different trainer.
The kid has seriously gotta get his head out of his arse and start fighting. What real preparation has he had for a world title shot? Sure he might end up fighting for a world title but he isnt going to be in the best possible condition (mentally or physically) for it, what with all these periods of inactivity.
I dont blame it all on Macklin but sometimes I really dont think the lad helps himself. I just feel so frustrated with Macklin's career. He's the one fighter that i want to succeed the most.

Contractual issues.....
Try this scenario. Macklin signs with Golden Boy on the basis of fighting Wright in Las Vegas, that fight triggering options. Then they offer up Gevor as an alternative with the same options latched on. What the Gevor fight does not do for Macklin is get him any exposure on US TV, so a world title fight is just as far away.
He is a promotional free agent. Golden Boy nicked him from under Warren's nose with the promise of Wright and Vegas. If Warren comes back with the offer of a world title shot, why shouldn't he take it?
Surely a world title shot is better than a world title eliminator?

But what does he gain from fighting a world champion and getting smashed and then moaning about inactivity, lack of opponents, promotional issues etc.. ??
I want my fighters to win world titles not just celebrate the fact that they have got a shot. Macklin is not ready for a world title shot coming off his past 12-18 months. Fact.

You say fact. I could see him beating Sylvester no problem.

Inactivity is never good for a fighter, especially coming into the biggest fight of your life.

This fight is in 2 weeks. He's unlikely to get a title shot at a time which would make this fight impossible. If he does get a title shot I'm not sure he's had enough quality experience, he struggled a lot in his last fight. If he even wins he'll probably be looking at easy defenses rather than what anyone wants to see - Barker, unifications etc. So he cancels a fight two weeks out for one which may or may not happen and lets down everyone involved in the promotion/anyone hoping too see him. He just seems to burn all his bridges.

But if he takes the fight, the options come into force and that could exclude him from a title shot for 18 months.
After all, 3 champions are from Germany, one from Russia and Martinez is with DiBella. Macklin has no US profile, neither do any of the German champions. So, without the big name of Wright on his record, he would have to take at least 2 fights over there for HBO to back him for a title shot.

I suppose thats the sort of pickle you get yourself in when youre more interested in signing as many deals as you can with different promotional organisations than actually fighting.
Perhaps Macklin should actually honour his contract and fight and forget about the consequence of the 'options' - that, lets no forget, he did agree to!
This whole situation unfortunately speaks for itself.

i was thinking specifically of the time thats elapsed since his winning the euro belt
his career has been kindof all over the shop for much longer but seeing as that was before he was so much as a british champion, it wasn't quite so starkly set as the current situation.

I'm surprised that this sort of thing doesn't get spoken of more whenever he's the topic of conversation. Given the repeated changes of promoters and trainers you'd assume he was an 'awkward' sort to work with, but everyone who's ever met him seems to describe him as the nicest bloke you're likely to come across.
An enigma to the outside eye, to be certain. I'd love to see him as a world champ, whichever way up.

I'd tempted to say put a fork in him. As fans it's all getting pretty boring as far as he's concerned now plus it's been a while since we've seen a good performance from him and this inactivity and messing around can't be helping at all - I think it was Hagler on here who said he thought he was shot, it wouldn't surprise me.
I wonder if Hatton will try and live off the Khan fight for this PPV or whether he'll try and line something else up. I wasn't long ago he was patting himself on the back for putting together such a great undercard and now with no Crolla v Rees and no Macklin, it's looking as piss poor as anything we've seen recently
