I was just reading an article in last weeks Boxing News about the Ndlovu and Molitor fight for the IBF superbantanweight title . Two judges , the South African and an American scored it 10 rounds to 2 for Ndlovu , while the Canadian judge scored it 8 rounds to 4 for Molitor . This happens now and again -its simply incredible how people can score fights so differently( the first Lewis v Holyfield fight was another example ) . There can only be 2 reasons for this - corruption or incompetence .
I have no idea how the governing bodies select their judges ,but the sensible method would be to advertise ,interview ,assess their scoring at live fights , attend training courses and then sit a practical exam . Thereafter have an annual appraisal . This process is what normal working people undergo ,either informally or formally . I am certain that none of the world governing bodies do anything akin to this . I suspect the process with them goes something like this - Does your friend want a nice all expenses paid holiday somewhere ? What's the catch ? He/she has to sit through a boxing match and put a score from one to ten against each of the boxers at the end of each round . How does he/she know how to do that ? It doesn't matter really , if in doubt ,give the high scores to the fighter most of the crowd is cheering for . Anything else my friend needs to know ? Pretend you know about boxing and look as if you're interested in the fight !!

Interview and questions from the area council then selection (if you pass the interview) then you attend live fights as a trainee referee and hand your score cards in, they are then checked against the official refs score cards to see if you are the same or close to his. After a while you are then allowed into the ring to officiate but a qualified ref at ringside will be officialy scoring the fight and will tell the trainee who has won (or indeed a draw) then you will be brought up before the referee commitee who will ask you questions that you have to answer correctly. They will then decide if you are good enough to become a B Class ref, you can then officiate 24 minutes of Boxing or up to 8 rounds. You are then expected to attain your A Class within 3 years of attaining your B Class, you are monitored at regular intervals and if you make what they deem a bad decision you are called to a meeting to answer why, then the very good ones are judged by existing A Star Referees as to whether they can become an A Star ref, this can take from around 6 years for the very talented such as Mr Foster or upto 10 years for regular guys and most refs stay at A class until they retire at 65.
