Fighters You Were Wrong About.

I guess we are all wrong sometimes. There are two categories that I'm thinking of.
1. Fighters that you thought would be a World Champion and Future Hall of Famer, but they never really made it.
2. Fighters that you thought would never get anywhere in their career, but they did.
I'll start with my own poorly judged predictions...
1. Andrew Maynard, Tyrell Biggs and David Tua.
2. Chris Eubank, Joe Calzaghe and Nikolay Valuev.

...i thought liston would destroy ali and derail his career before it even got started...
i saw the patterson johansson fight on closed circuit and thought ingemar had a great future..(in over 65 years of following boxing i'm sure i've been wrong a score of times...but these are the ones that come first to my mind.....maybe i'll think of some more later...)

Rodolfo "El Gato" Gonzalez...Not the first Gato, the second one. He really dissapointed me when he lost to Claude Noel.

I drank the Kool Aid regarding Ed Mahone. Ouch! And thought Greg Page was going to show more determination than he did.

Cristian Mijares is the last fighter I've fallen for the hype hook, line, and sinker. What a drop off.

I was onboard the Linares & JuanMa Lopez bandwagons early and said that Lopez would go further and higher up the weights but caveated it saying he really must not fall in love with his power.
I remember laughing long and hard when someone said Khan would win world title(s) after turning pro and eclipse Ali but it seems I was wrong about him winning his first world title.
I thought Ross Hale would win more than the British title and thought Crawford Ashley could win a portion of the world...but then I thought Carl Thompson would beat Johnny Nelson.

I thought Alex Ramos and Curtis Parker would be top Middleweight contenders and potentially win the title.
Wlad fits both categories for me. I actually liked him when he first emerged on the scene and thought he was a major threat to Lennox. Then after the Brewster fight and even more after the Williamson one I would have never pegged him to last this long without a panic attack. The division is abysmal, but I still would have bet against this many wins in a row.

Another one that I was convinced was giong to the top was Errol Christie. I was always told that he looked like a world beater in the gym, but he never quite made it.

I thought Michael "The Silk" Olajide was going to be huge. I thought Richie Sandoval would be an alltime great. He did win the title, but I expected alot more.

Sandoval almost died, ironically he may have saved more lives by doing that.

Guys who I thought would have better careers than they did…
Lonnie Smith (Jr Welter) – looked amazing beating Billy Costello
Barry McGuigan – still had an excellent career but too much time out of the ring after the Cruz defeat and he never got back to what he was. Wins over Laporte, Pedroza and Taylor proved he had it but there was more in the tank
Errol Christie – as mentioned
Mark Breland – again, another top career, but he was billed as the second coming of Tommy Hearns and nobody could really live up to that
Others
Steve Collins – achieved more than I thought he would on first viewing but he was a strong man with underrated skills (I see that now)

Mark Breland - I thought he was destined for greatness. He couldn't even manage that with help from the referee!
Donald Curry - I also thought he was going to wipe out the memories of Sugar Ray Leonard & Tommy Hearns from the early 80s, but he did nothing of the sort.

1. Jeff Lacy. I used to argue that if Taylor moved up to fight him at the time, Taylor would get demolished. Fell into the mini-Tyson hype.
Sam Peter. I thought he would be dominant in a weak heavyweight division even after he showed more of himself in the 2nd Toney fight. Calvin Brock also.
Edison Miranda. I thought after he beat Pavlik(I picked him to win), he'd be the one to take Taylor down.
Kassim Ouma. Very dissapointed in how his career ended up.
2. Pacquiao. I have to admit, when I first seen him beat Barrera the first time, I thought he was a "right now" type of thing and the Morales fight further put this in my head. I became a fan after the third Morales fight..
Calzaghe. Never thought anything was special about him besides his stamina and workrate.
Andre Ward - 2-3 years ago, I was sure he'd get sparked by a top 168er. How have I've been wrong.

I didn't think you would post on this thread, as you are never wrong.

Comprehension not your strongest suite? I guess one entire sentence is a long time to concentrate, to be fair.

Don't you mean stongest 'suit'. Off course, you could be talking about leather sofas.
