Step up?

This is a big step down from McEwan. Bunema hasn't been relevant for 3 years (at 154 pounds), he hasn't fought in almost two years, and he lost that bout to a 16-5 fighter who was then knocked out in one round and four rounds in his next two bouts.

Maybe they should have a smiley with a tongue being firmly stuck in little smileymans cheek.

At least it drew out a couple of reactionary clowns, but no Bennie.

p.s. Bunema isnt a bad as you think either, even at the weight.

I am sure SB is taking the piss J - we all know this is yet another BS marking time match.

As has been said many times before, however, this type of matchmaking shows us how little faith Lee's people have in his abilities, unfortunately.

Given that this is the internet and we can't see or hear you, it would help to add in a smiley of some sort if you are being sarcastic.

At this stage in his career Bunema is definitely a poor opponent for a middleweight contender. He couldn't even beat Willie Lee two years ago, so I don't see how he will be able to remotely trouble the far superior Lee.

HBO dont want him again until August - Vera rematch.

Would you prefer he sat on his arse until or fight this guy?

People moan that boxers dont fight as much in the modern era and then slate them when they stay busy. Hes after coming off the back of a really hard fought KO win against McEwan and will now fight Bunema and then maybe Anthony Fitzgerald before taking on Vera.

Damned if you do.............

one would have thought that given the stick Lee gets on here and that his last fight was against unbeaten Craig McEwan that this obviously isnt as step up. Therein lay the sacrcasm, or so I thought.

Like I have said before, if this was his only fight in 6 months then I would agree he would deserve stick for it, but as it will be one of 4 fights in 5 months then I actually think the people need to reassess their opinions of Lee.

Just a thought.

I just don't see why Lee needs to be fighting such poor opposition in these "stay busy" fights. Guys like Thiam, Lowry, Cook and now Bunema are terrible opponents for a world ranked contender. Cook hadn't won a fight in two years and had never defeated anyone decent; Lowry hadn't won a fight in five years and had been KO'd four times in a row; and Thiam was 38 and beyond shot. As far as his next bout goes, Lee could at least fight a regular middleweight who has fought and won some time in the last year and eight months. I don't see why that is too much to ask, and he would be criticized less for it.

Lee doesn't choose the level of opponent for his 'stay busy' fights; his handlers do.

As Crusader states these types of opponents won't ready him for the middleweight elite: it is a worry for me that his management have deemed it necessary that he is handled with kid gloves - its only a matter of time before we see another Vera style upset, I fear..

You are right, a fight against these types of opponents won't ready him for the middleweight elite, but it will get him ready for Bryan Vera.

And a fight against Bryan Vera will get him ready for the middleweight elite.

I am not saying that Lee will go all the way, anyone that watched the McEwan fight would have serious reservations about him even getting past Vera again but I dont see any issue with getting a couple of fights like these in before he fights Vera in August on HBO.

After a performance like that against McEwan there will be plenty of offers from those looking to reclaim his scalp.

Amazingly, I actually agree with you on most of this, simply based on the fact that is the wake of the McEwan showing, everyone seems to have re-calibrated their expectations of Lee. The only bit I'd differ on is that I don't think a fight against Vera will get him ready for the middleweight elite.

I think that Vera's recent wins over Demers and Mora have firmed up Vera's credentials as the gatekeeper in the world title level at the division.

On his most recent performances I couldnt see Lee beating any of the current middleweight "champions".

His best hope is that Macklin can pull off a win in Germany and that sets up a voluntary "All-Irish Super Fight" in Dublin around Christmas.

Andy Lee is a joke, this match up is ridiculous. Like Duddy before him he's all hype and no trousers.

Should just keep taking the pay days, if he ever stepped up to world class it would be humiliating for him.

It is a fight for Lee to iron out a few of the faults of the McEwan fight, Christ there is no pleasing some people. Would you rather he sat on his arse doing nothing. Nothing beat fight experience no matter what level of opponent, Im more a reader than a poster on this forum but I have read so much bull about Lemieux and Kirkland over the past couple of years and both got KOd in there last fights. Lee is a genuine contender in the middleweight division. Flaws? yes of course but the criticism he has received on this forum really does annoy me. Oh and Lee has no intention of fighting Anthony Fitzgerald anytime soon

No disrespect Len but a fight with Bryan Vera will not get him ready for "the elite" at any weight mate

Hooky, do you not find it refreshing that a fighter is seeking to avenge his only defeat for which he has been criticised and taunted about for nearly two years? Fair enough, Vera isn't world level but Leonard is probably right - Lee is probably waiting for the winner of Sturm vs Macklin, preferably Macklin.

But he's not arguing that point, he's taking issue with the claim that a fight with Vera will get him ready for the elite. A point which surely no-one can dispute?

It's hardly Lewis v Rahman though is it Deno? It's a half-decent middleweight against a half-decent middleweight. Nothing more, nothing less.

And I doubt the winner of Macklin vs Sturm will lose too much sleep over him tbh.

Always nice to get a bit of support when you're debating with the Irish lads though, Deserter...

Len and Deno are a mean pair, I'm expecting a backlash of Bernard Dunne-like proportions... :)

"Hook, you are a fecking eejit"

Etc etc...
