Pryor-Arguello and Hagler-Hearns come to mind first. How about some cheers for Chacon-Limon IV?

For a bit of everything, it has to be Pryor-Arguello I. Hagler-Hearns, dare I say it, got a bit sloppy at times. Hearns couldn't control his legs from the second...

pryor-arguello 2 is always under rated i think, i think its nearly as good as the 1st one

And how about Saad Muhammad-Lopez II in July '80?

As a point of reference, here is the list of the
Ring's FOY for the 80s:
1980 Matthew Saad Muhammad KO 14 Yaqui Lopez
1981 Sugar Ray Leonard KO 14 Thomas Hearns
1982 Bobby Chacon W 15 Bazooka Limon
1983 Bobby Chacon W 12 Cornelius Boza-Edwards
1984 Jose Luis Ramirez KO 4 Edwin Rosario
1985 Marvin Hagler KO 3 Thomas Hearns
1986 Steve Cruz W 15 Barry McGuigan
1987 Sugar Ray Leonard W 12 Marvin Hagler
1988 Tony Lopez W 12 Rocky Lockridge
1989 Roberto Duran W 12 Iran Barkley
I wish the Ring would also mention the other fights that were top candidates for each year's FOY. A lot of really good fights (often ones that most knowledgeable people agree were better than the particular year's Ring FOY) are not on that list, though obviously most of the ones that are were great fights, too. The Arguello/Pryor series in '82 and '83 (neither fighter was the same after those 2 fights) or Holyfield/Qawi I in '86, for instance.

If we want to dig a little deeper into the pool of great '80s fights, how about Aaron Pryor-Dujuan Johnson? I think this fight, even more than vs. Arguello, was the exemplary Aaron Pryor bout. What a wild ride.

The Pryor-Johnson fight was intense from the prefight instructions on. A great battle of exciting inner city products. Amazing to think that Johnson was only 20 years old then.
He stopped Aaron's initial onslaught knocking him down in the first and I think he also had the best of the wild exchanges they had in the first 4-5 rounds. I think in the end it was Pryor's stamina that prevailed and also his great ability at finishing his opponents.
Looking at Johnson's record, his last bout before he was shot dead in 1984 was in Brisbane, Australia against Brian Jenssen in what is described as a "magnificient fight", Does anybody have more info on this?

I seem to remember reading that Johnson's left hooks to the body slowed the tough, dangerous Aussie, and enabled Johnson to outlast his man.

I'd have to go with Hearns/Leonard in '81 followed by Hearns/Hagler and Arguello/Pryor 1 tied for second.

Leonard vs Hagler for me, our family were discussing that one for weeks before the fight and weeks after the fight. Its the greatest fight of all time in terms of build up and drama etc - I'm mean two P4P all time greats going at it (add the fact that they disliked each other).
The fight lived up to all expectations if you ask me.
It was so good, that people thought it was fixed and they weren't hurting each other.
2nd Hagler vs Hearns.
3rd Prior vs Arguello.
4th Leonard vs Hearns 1.
5th Chavez vs Rosario.
