Barry's earlier post concerning the ludicrous governing body situation in boxing today addressed an issue I have been racking my brains over for years. That issue! How do we ignore the Mickey Mouse titles that blight out sport and highlight the genuine champions? Something has to be done, after all. The current situation is killing the game.
As Barry stated in his post, one way to decipher the genuine champions is through lineage, i.e., the man who beat the man, etc. That is an excellent way at looking at it. Can anyone suggest any other ways?

The only other suggestion is to form a new governing body, formed by boxing experts (prefrably rich ones, who will not be influenced in any way).

Basically, form a new belt and promote it in such a way that it becomes the belt to fight for!

I dont think there is Bennie as we all know "money" talks and those titles still pay a fair amount of money

We all know that Promotors weald so much power, often backed by TV Companies that desperately say we want World Title fights, and sadly Joe Public, not hardened boxing fans, often fall for it.
Is allegedly wrong to allow Hatton to continue as WBU Champion, always fighting in Manchester, before big crowds or not ?
The boxing heart says no he is not, because we want to see Hatton as undisputed, holding something like the WBC version.
The boxing head says of course he is right.
Why risk it all, to satisfy the whims of the boxing purists ?

I'm with you all the way Bennie with your desire, but sadly it will never go back to the good old days such as during the Conteh era, when only two versions existed, and when one of our lads won, you could truly say "World Champion".

What is somewhat saddening, is that very few British boxers these days, seem to actually give a toss about being regarded as the very best in their division.

Calzaghe is the perfect example of this, although many consider him the best in the division, he has done nothing to actually prove it. There are a lot of fighters he hasn't taken on, and whilst I loathe Ottke, at least he has taken on pretty much everyone, even if he didn't always deserve the decision.

I hope that Hatton does get a genuine world title, his talent deserves it, and I would rather that he tried and failed to get a WBA/IBF title belt, than to just sit on his spurious title, calling out people to come to him.

I really want to see Hatton in America, I know he has a huge following here, but from the people I speak to in the states, they are really dying to see him fight in a big venue over there, he has quite a big following over there, and is surprisingly highly rated by American pundits.

say what you like about Naz, but he had no qualms whatsoever about taking on the very best.

cement his claim don't be a wally he already is a 3 weight champion thats surely the premise u have to go on. the man who beat the man and barrera was the man cos he beat naz and morales.

so even boxing writers have a problem seeing past the sanctioning bodies god help us
