The main event on a steve woods v.i.p promotion show at leigh yesterday was a little cracker of a fight a good buzz surrounding the fight, both of the fighters looking in good shape when stepping in the ring a very good 50-50 fight.
Right from the opening bell both boxers decided attack was the best form of defense and started trading in the centre of the ring, matching punch for punch, neil probably getting the better of the first round but chris did get off some good shots off his own at this point the work rate of beevers was fast and strong and looked like his plan was to not allow chris to work at his pace which i thought was quite a bad idea as he would be blowing after a few rounds if he was to keep that pace in a 10 x 3 fight.
Round two was more or less more of the same, beevers pushing forward like a steam train non stop punching and chris would let of jabs and let off some beautiful combination work but i think stayed in too long and got caught, where if he let off a 3 or 4 punch combination and then stepped back out of range or spun off to the sides or stepped to the sides he would have had beevers more disorientated, i think chris wanted to stand toe to toe and let off his shots but i think could have made it easier for himself as technically looked like the better boxer whilst niel looked more of the brawler and slugger which left him wide open at one point in the second round he had caught chris with some good shots but chris tucked up and absorbed some good shots and proved he can not only box but he could have a tear up as well.
Third round chris was boxing alot better letting his jab go followed by the back hand and good work to the body and at times did move off but still stood toe to toe most of the round niel was getting hit more and looked like he was blowing in the third round chris caught him with a good shot knocking him down and having to take the 8 count, this round neil did land shots as well but chris was coming off far better where as neil looked like he was hurt each time he was caught and jabbed right on the button knocking his head back and again chris getting caught for staying in too long.
The fourth round neil still pushing forward landing straight shots and throwing some wild hooks and leaving himself wide open for chris to jab his head back then follow up with the back hand and and caught him with a hard back hand rocking neils head back and chris went in for the finish landing a few more shots then the referee phil edwards stepping in.
neil beevers put in a good performance looked very strong, and chris johnson looked like he was wobbled once or twice but kept his compusure and tucked up well but showed he can take a shot and come back with his own and looked super fit which credit goes to his trainer karl ince from elite boxing in Bolton for getting him in excellent condition where a lot of other fighters would not have been able to withstand a strong brawler like neil beevers all in all i think was a excellent performance for chris and showed alot about his character and determination to win a tough fight to retain his central area welterweight title.
