Interesting pro-Groves piece

Good piece, nice analysis. I should point out though that the 31 people we polled were all British trainers, it wasn't a staff poll, which the term 'Boxing Monthly's experts' might suggest.Ian 'Mr' McNeilly wrote:By self-confessed Groves fan, David Simpson:

Yes I noticed that Glyn, thought you should have polled the BM staff too, why not. I imagine you tried to get hold of Paul Smith to ask him too ? Be interesting to hear his take on it.Glyn Leach wrote:Good piece, nice analysis. I think the angle for this one was that it was exclusively a poll of trainers, MW.MightyWarrior wrote:Yes I noticed that Glyn, thought you should have polled the BM staff too, why not. Looking forward to seeing more of the same for the Haye/Wlad fight - a poll like that will come down about 75-25 for Wlad I reckon. Will it be you or GH doing the preview ?
Ah thanks for that, interesting to see. That's pretty much how I see it too, Booth looks like he's making a massive mistake with this fight.J-C wrote: Smith is going for a DeGale KO http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FMZ4RYseSnE
Oh yeah, I should have noticed that. Good read though, really enjoyed the whole mag.Ian 'Mr' McNeilly wrote: I think the angle for this one was that it was exclusively a poll of trainers, MW.
I look forward to being embarrassed in any future staff polls as I'm a terrible picker.
Sorry, I have to ask. Who do you think will win this one?Ian 'Mr' McNeilly wrote:I think the angle for this one was that it was exclusively a poll of trainers, MW.

We could have done a staff poll Warrior, you're right — not done that for a while, might be good to start them up again. But no, we didn't ask Smigga, we stuck to trainers exclusively — figured their take on the respective styles and developments would be interesting. The difficulty with polling fighters is that they can very rarely talk without a bias — either they are are linked to one of the fighters promotionally, they're a gymmate, etc. It becomes who they want to win rather than who they think will win. Hence for the Haye fight we've taken a different approach to the poll — when we ran a British trade one first time round though, before David's, ahem, 'bad back', it was vastly in his favour from what I remember, unrealistically so (everyone loves Dave, don't they!). I think we've got round that problem this time. And the Houst has done the preview — and very good it is, too, might I say!MightyWarrior wrote:

DeGale by stoppage, I think.Asterix wrote:Sorry, I have to ask. Who do you think will win this one?Ian 'Mr' McNeilly wrote:I think the angle for this one was that it was exclusively a poll of trainers, MW.

Yes I'd forgoten about the previous poll, and the results did seem out of whack - I doubt the bookies will be making DH favorite. True about the fighters - it's like if you ask a fighter who's the hardest puncher they've ever met -most of the time they'll pick a fighter they've beaten, rather than someone who's actually knocked them out.Glyn Leach wrote: We could have done a staff poll Warrior, you're right — not done that for a while, might be good to start them up again. Could dent the camp's confidence, Adam and David do like to think they're a step ahead of the rest. That said, it might be like when Ryan Rhodes lost for the first time, to Otis Grant, and his stablemate and friend Naz went out and smacked Kevin Kelley the next night even though he was in a state of shock because he believed his and Ryan's (Brendan Ingle) style was impossible to beat on points.Asterix wrote:The result of this fight might impact what I think Haye's chances are like, as it'll help me to see what Hayemaker's judgement is like.
Harrison to beat Haye is one of my favourite Ian picks....Ian 'Mr' McNeilly wrote:I think the angle for this one was that it was exclusively a poll of trainers, MW.MightyWarrior wrote:Yes I noticed that Glyn, thought you should have polled the BM staff too, why not.
