Very interesting to get both sides of a difference of opinion for a change and it raises some interesting points.
The one which concerns me most is, who is correct on the safest and most profitable course of action for a boxer to take.
No one can argue with the fact that, far too many boxers want to run before they can walk and tend to be too brave for their own good. On the other hand however, a certain promoter can be accused of holding boxers back to the detriment of both their income and progress through the various ranking procedures whilst at the same time providing them with a steady and reasonable to good, if somewhat lower than could be achieved; income.
It also has to be remembered that there is only so much money in the pot and a promoter has to decide where to put that money both in terms of his own fighter’s purses and the amount he is prepared to spend on credible opponents, some of whom don’t come cheap in order to enhance his fighter’s reputation and standing. Particularly when he has a good number of his rated boxers on one bill which can only give a certain amount of return for the cost of promoting it.
This makes some boxers feel, rightly or wrongly, that their name is being used to pad the bill in order to make it look good, but the money is being spent on a chosen few while they fight cheap and sub-standard opposition and fail to make any real progress for far too long.
Who is right, Kell or Fwank?
At Kell’s post fight interview after he beat Philip Kotey at the return of the Magnificent 7, Frank made it quite clear that as far as he was concerned there was no rush and that Kell had to be patient. He also stated that there was plenty of time for Kell to get to a world title.
It appears that Kell disagrees with this and considers that he is ready, and has been for some time, to go for world honours. The Sky T.V. commentators, before, during and after the fight appear to agree with Kell and in my humble opinion he is certainly ready to compete at world level, if not at the very top i.e. Pacquio and Mayweather.
I also feel that the balance was wrong in Kell’s case. I don’t disagree with Frank that one shouldn’t take unnecessary risks but, I feel that in Kell’s case he held the reigns far too tightly and Kell should have been given his head, to coin a racing term, over a year ago.
It is to be hoped that Kell’s present team give Kell the opportunity to prove himself at a much higher level that he is at present and then we can judge who is right, Frank or Kell.
