watching it again
just finished round 6 and got it 58-57 Groves -
definitely admit 2,3,4 all were Groves rounds in an impressive manner that i didn't see on the night (in the arena)
1 - 10-9 Degale
2 - 10-9 George
3 - 10-9 George
4 - 10-9 George
5 - 10-10
6 - 10-9 Degale

round 7 tight but maybe just about Groves 10-9
so 68-56

round 8 could have been nicked by DeGale but it could have been a draw - very tight
so 10-10
so 78-76
can't believe how little degale is showing - how little he follows up any good work, how reluctant to engage - putting no punches together

round 9 clearly degale - that's how he should have fought whole fight.
it's 87 to 86 groves for me

sorry for talking to myself ...
round 10 to groves
97-95
can't believe Degale let momentum swing back after a strong 9th

round 11 Degale just
107--106 Groves
Degale should be going hell for leather in 12

even round.
Groves won by a point for me watching that on TV.
Thought James nicked it in the arena but watching that i was definitely wrong.
Great tactics from Groves and poor performance from degale -
hats off

Was a tight fight anyway you slice it.
Groves will get better, as will James. People think, incorrectly imo, that James is going to go on and prove he is the better fighter.
I don't think that is the case, at all. Tactics etc aside, James got outboxed and couldn't do much about it, it wasn't that he did not try, he just did not know how to.
I believed before the fight, Groves only chance was to get Degale to come to him, use a strong jab and bang the body. I didn't think he could actually do it, so hats off to him.
For the record, I had Groves up by one point. A great win.

I scored it 115-113 Degale when I watched it live. I watched it a second time and had the same final score, but my round by round scoring was a bit different.
Second watch:
1. Degale
2. Groves
3. Groves
4. Groves
5. Degale
6. Degale
7. Degale
8. Groves
9. Degale
10. Groves
11. Degale
12. Degale

i watched it again too, on mute.
Had Groves 2 rounds up (on the night scored it a draw), but like has been posted ad nauseum, De Gale fought the wrong fight. His inability to throw a second batch of punches after 1 or 2 landed was amateurish. He has all the better skills - hand speed by a mile, but the way Groves twisted out of any force of offensive attach and re-grouped was great to see.
a classc "mugging"

got my maths all wrong - i had it 115-114 groves on the tv watch
on night i had it 115-113 degale
amazing how different it was on tv and we didn't have bad seats -
tight fight but really don't think Degale showed what he could do but a lot of credit to Groves for making the fight in his style.
spot on Loynesy - never followed his punches up, and Groves work off ropes and away from trouble was terrific

I had Degale by 1 on the night and maybe Groves by one this time round, although I never score 10-10 rounds as favour the agressor so that may count for something.
Shows though how close a fight it was and although Degale was poor on the night, he could have quite easily won.

Degale looked the business against Smith, why?
Degale looked poor against Groves, why?
It is a little frustrating that people are quite happy to put this result down to Degale having an off day or whatever.
He didn't, George outboxed him and confused (movement), made him tentative and cautious (body shots). Credit where it is due.
Against Smith, he was made him look like a million dollars as Smith went straight at him and giving him opportunities to throw and land.
George made him fight that way and fight poorly. It wasn't Degale just not throwing enough punches, he was made to fight the way he did.
Credit where it is due.

I've watched round 5 four times now and i don't see how anyone can score it for degale (as i know alot of people did). I think Jim Watts commentating was particularly eccentric in that round. When he says "better from degale" about 4 times in the middle of the round it sounds like he's trying to convince himself and even things up because he gave george the previous 3 rounds. Degale starts to come forward and commit a bit more but he's still missing alot and lands alot less clean shots than george imo. I did think a few rounds were very close but not that one particularly. Btw, are you watching the ringside re-run with Booth & Groves? Not seen it but my mate says it's crackin.

nope I had it even in round 5, def not a James round -
the re-run with Booth and Groves was brilliant especially where Booth explicitly explained their tactics and it was excellent, and Groves said he watched Barrera's magnificent dismantling of Hamed as inspiration - which is one of my favourite performances in boxing and an excellent reference point. Really interesting. Their gameplan was spot on and as has been said, the way Groves fought took all of Degales strengths away, which Booth basically said was exactly what they planned to do and when you listen to him in between rounds during the fight , he keeps reminding him.
Equally James and Jimmy Mc didn't work out a way to pour it on, but indeed yes Groves work was far better than i realised on the night in taking the initiative away from a boxer i still believe to be far more naturally talented.
Degale will have to work harder, prepare better and have a plan of his own if he wants to win a rematch convincingly. He definitely has the ability, but now it's about the mentality. First and foremost he needs to get back in the ring fast, has no time to feel sorry for himself and needs to prove to himself as much as anyone that he's got a big future. (or fig buture........)

I missed tonight's Ringside and it doesn't seem to be available to watch on Skyplayer - anyone know where I can see it?

Was Ringside on last night, or was it replaced by the 'This is it' programme that's being repeated tonight?

I watched it again, it's really tight as there are so many close rounds. On the night I had De Gale up by one, now I'm not so sure, could have a draw. I was pleased for Groves, he really seems to be enjoying his moment, and good luck to him. I did smile when he said beating De Gale was easy, not quite how I saw it.

All fair points.
DeGale, like many fighters good and great, likes his opponent to come to him. Hagler, Monzon, etc...all liked the other man to lead. Groves refused to do this. Even when DeGale backed of fhe refused.
DeGale had only had 10 fights and hadn't enough experience of different stykles to adjust and find a winning game plan. In the future, with more experience he might just crack the code.
I hope this fight proves that taking on a big, competitive fight early in your career is a positive thing win or lose.

Degale won.
He was the bigger puncher for starters.
There wasn't a single big round for Groves.
Degale never looked in any kind of trouble,Groves was moved by punches throughout the contest.
Groves spent most of the time backing up and taking significant and eyecatching punches.
There were more than a few close rounds though.
Degale won
