Former world champion Jeff Fenech was stabbed on a Sydney street last night. Fenech was rushed to hospital covered in blood after he was set upon and stabbed by a gang of four men.
His jawbone was visible through the savage cut he received to his face - a gash on his right cheek measured an estimated 7cm by 4cm. Fenech said this morning part of his face was "hanging off" and he would need plastic surgery today.
"I just hope the police give me the opportunity to face these guys off one time face-to-face," Fenech said.
"All my boxing career I've remained pretty unmarked and now I'm going to have a nasty scar on my face."
A casual night out for Fenech and his wife Suzee and family turned horribly wrong after he was attacked by the gang outside a restaurant in Brighton le Sands in south Sydney.
Fenech was shaking hands with passers-by and well-wishers on The Boulevarde in Brighton when he was set upon by the gang of men who came out of two cars.
He had just sent his two daughters and their babysitter home in a limousine when the attack took place.
Fenech had finished dinner with family and friends and was speaking to a man on the corner of The Boulevarde and Grand Parade when the four assailants leapt from two cars.
Witnesses said one man pinned the boxer's arms behind his back while the other three began punching him in the face and chest.
As the boxer's friends rushed to his aid, one of the men stabbed Fenech in the face with what police believe was a knife.
There is speculation one of the attackers may have been wearing a set of knuckle dusters.
"It all happened in a split second," one witness said.
Despite the extent of his wounds, "The Marrickville Mauler" attempted to chase his assailants down the street. His shirt was covered in blood.
Fenech was treated at the scene by ambulance officers before being taken to the Prince of Wales Hospital.
Fenech, born in Marrickville, is regarded as one of the toughest and hardest fighters of his era.
He is now one of the country's top boxing coaches and is the trainer of Australia's newest world titleholder, Danny Green, who last month won the WBC interim super-middleweight title in Montreal.

Fenech is not one to curb his tongue and probably has quite a few enemies to choose from but this attack was a deplorable and cowardly act. Slashing his face is disgraceful and cannot be condoned, i hope they catch this scum and give them there due punishment.

another sad reflection on society.not sure about overseas but here in oz the number of times you hear of or even see someone get beaten by a group of people just seems to get worse.these dicks probably think they are utter champions and really tough.that is th thin i can never work out.how can you be tough when you have to outnumber your opponent 4 to 1.
when they do catch the guys(and they wil)i hope fenech gets his way and gets a one on one meeting with each of them,if you know what i mean.be

I came back from Sydney last year, and i must admit its a lovely place and i saw no trouble apart from once, I was walking past a stripclub, and this Chopper was hassling me to come in and because i wouldnt he called me a Faggot...now i dont know what the reaction of an Ozzie would be in that situation , but where i come from that is most definetly fighting talk, needless to say, a fat lip and a few scrapes round the cheek n neck later my pride was restored.....my point is there is a lot of Asshole`s in the world, but what happend to Jeff is a fornicating disgracefull and cowardly act. I hope they catch the twats and give them a good old fashioned beating.
