Fed up with incorrect articles regarding Froch

Am I the only one who is getting fed up with reading reports on the internet that are factually incorrect, I have followed Froch since he fought Robin Reid and think he is the best fighter in britain today, but these web writers are not helping Froch by not telling the whole story.

Just read an article on Fanhouse.co.uk by Chris McKenna and he has stated that "after years of obscurity on fringe pay-per-view channels or no coverage at all in the UK." This is an incorrect statement, wish these guys would do their research.

how many uk fighters have been showcased on UK terrestrial tv over the last 3 years? If I'm right, apart from Froch, Khan is the only one, since 2008 Frochs fights against Rybacki, pascal, taylor and dirrell were shown primetime on ITV, yes i know the Taylor and Dirrell fights were shown on a delay basis but were still shown primetime, it was only the Kessler and Abraham fights that were shown in the UK soley on Primetime, but then again I think both of these fights were shown on eurosport afterward. so prove me wrong and tell me what other UK fighter has had this amount of exposure. And Carl has been showcased around europe, canada and the US. Was Hayes last fights shown in north america????

And what is the difference between Sky, Sky Box Office and Primetime, I know Primetime is new, had a few teething problems and I know of friends who had problems at the start but that seems to have been sorted now, fair play to them for stepping up. All 3 are on the sky platform, all available on virgin, so all three are available to the same audience.

It bugs me as the public seem to be missing this point. And it bugs me that everyone thinks that Froch is now going to get the recognition he deserves by fighting on Sky, what is sky going to do different, put him on soccer am which has about 50,000 veiwers per week, hasn't he had more exposure than most fighters over the last 3 years already, wasn't he on question of sport a few weeks ago, and i remember seeing him on let's dance last year on primetime BBC and wasn't he on bbc breakfast after his fight against Abraham, so he has had the exposure.

As I said I have followed Froch since the Reid fight, and I remember Froch was once slagged off by people on here righting him off, saying he wouldn't make it because of his defence, low hands ect.

lets not forget that only the people who pay for skysports will be able watch this tomorrow night . So no different to Primetime. People moan about sky box office but still pay, so why paying for primetime so different, yes i know that the quailty isn't great but then again sbo isn't perfect, u only get the same amount of fights for the same amount of cash.

I haven't got skysports and was looking forward to listening to this on the radio like i did for the last 2 of frochs fights and hayes and khans but I noticed that it is not on the radio this time, so us who don't have skysports still aren't going to be able to watch the fight.

So much for having more exposure now, it seems to have gone the other way for Froch.!!

It pains me to say it but Froch will never be another, Hatton, Khan, Haye or Calzaghe due to his cold and stern personality, (Fat Mick cannot be blamed for this) but he will go down as one of the great british fighters. (but we can blame Fat Mick for getting him the British, Commonwealth, WBC titles as well as in to the Super Six)

Come on the Cobra!!

Well there was Tyson Fury also - on the Undercard of Froch vs Pascal.. if you want to be pedantic at it.... but your post is generally completely correct. I'm also fed up with people saying how badly Froch has been promoted - he has one of the most exposed fighters from the UK in recent years. Nobody, possibly aside from Khan and Harrison, in the last 20 years has had more fights on primetime terrestial TV.

Although there is a big difference between Sky and Primetime. Sky can advertise on the other Sky channels (and have done with Froch this time).

One thing I have noticed though since Froch has left Hennessy is the exposure in the general media - There seems to be a BBC reporter following him around America - this all adds to the exposure. Question I have is where the eff were the BBC when Froch was a BBC fighter!

the pascal fight is the only one that was 'promoted' correctly....

the taylor and dirrell fights were on a 24hr delay ffs - that's hardly primetime!

it's not just about getting the exposure...it's also about getting his name out there and hennessey sports didnt not seem to be very good in that regard.

This repeated accusation that Mick didn't promote Frochy properly gets to me. He got him to the most highly respected title out there, on ITV where the fight was watched by (I believe) 5 million-plus, yet people seem to think Frochy would be more popular if he had been watched by 400,000 people on Sky. Go figure that one out.

Again, Mick did everything right but then ITV suffered a massive loss for the year 2008 and dropped boxing. At that time, Sky already had deals in place with other promoters and was not willing to break its structure in order to bring the Hennessy stable onboard. That wasn't Mick's fault, it was plain bad luck. He couldn't force Sky to break their structure and give him a deal, could he.

In regards to Froch having fought most of his Super Six bouts abroad, people aren't taking into account a) the difficulty in promoting a major show without proper TV backing, by which I mean money (No disrespect to Primetime) b) the demands of Showtime and c) Froch opponents such as Kessler and Abraham having strong TV backing and a higher degree of public support in their own countries than Froch has in Britain — let's not kid ourselves here, I was at Nottingham Arena for the Pascal fight and there were a good few empty seats.

I dunno, I just think Mick gets a raw deal from a lot of you sometimes. To me he was forward thinking, doing everything the right way, then it all went wrong and he was left in a hole he couldn't get out of through no fault of his own, resulting in everyone else, including Sky who had ignored Froch for years (which kind of sticks in the throat when you see how up his arse they are now they've finally decided to televise him when at one stage he couldn't buy a mention on Sky Sports News), cherry picking Hennessy's best fighters after he had done all the work in building them.

Apologies for the mini rant, but this subject really does get to me.

The Taylor fight was practically as good as it could have been, being that it was in the States. This frequently happened in the "glory" days of Boxing. The only coverage I have seen of Curry vs Honeyghun from ITV was a delayed one, cannot remember if they showed the fight live or "as live". Same with Bruno vs Witherspoon and a large number of big fights.

Plus there wasn't just these fights, what about his entire career before these fights. On good platform channels or terrestial TV.

Completely agree with your point about getting his name out there but two points.

1) Froch used to say time and time again he didn't want the exposure. He didn't want to do the media circuit - things seemed to have changed considerably in this regard - but no one will know if opportunities were out there and Hennessy said no cause it wasn't Froch's thing.

2) Its not really Hennessy's job to tell TV execs, this is how he should be advertised. Did ITV advertise any FW bill (when he went back) to a satisfactory standard? No.... Hennessy's job was to work out the best TV deal to get exposure - now most promoters before hand would have chopped their right hand off for Primetime ITV 1 or ITV 4.... but they must trust the TV execs to advertise it, and its not Mick's fault they didn't.

However on this point, in terms of TV power Mick, Franks and everyone are small small small fry compared to Matchroom sports. If Matchroom sports are not happy about how a fighter/event is advertised on TV, Sky could face a potentially huge consequence - so Sky are more likely to listen to their opinion. Isn't it coincidental that the only fighters you seen advertised on NORMAL sky are the Prizefighters and now Carl Froch. I think I even saw an advert for Barker vs Spada.

I was a sceptic at first, but most certainly the tide is definately turning in the power battles of the promoters. I do hope we don't see a GBP esque monopoly, but it might happen.

x 2

The timing of Froch moving camps really grates me especially. On the potential crest of massive things..... amazingly Matchroom will get some money for this bout which was set BY Hennessy.

The fights were set, Froch could have left after the SS and I would have been fine with it - but to leave half way through is very disloyal.

Your points are so true another point (which you do mention) that Mick gets criticised for is "Froch has to travel to get the big fights".... well off course he does. America are not going to get their PPV names out here for a fight that will be shown on delayed in the states. Thats why Joe Calzaghe had to fight Lacy at 3 am, thats why it was Paul McCloskey facing Khan and not a Zab Judah/Tim Bradley last month.

Without a huge TV investment we will never get to see a big US name over here - simply because American TV won't want it on PPV if its not live.

Plus all this "Mick was stupid to have agreed a verbal deal with Saurland". It was announced on ITV yonks ago that Froch would have to travel to Germany. Froch was interviewed on ITV when the Super 6's was announced saying he would need to travel to fight Abraham. The only time it was mentioned about Froch vs Abraham in the UK was AFTER he lost to Kessler. I think Hennessy played a blinder to even get it in Finland - painted the Saurlands as the bad guys in a presser that he knew would be viewed by millions of people and Showtime.

I think there's a degree of Hennessy suffering for his own success here. Once Mick signed Carl up for Super Six, which has been the making of Frochy on the world stage, his career path for the next two years was set, which probably made Mick look a bit superfluous. Essentially, Showtime have promoted S6, all the promoters are required to do is stage fights — there's no negotiation left to be done as such aside from venues and as I said, fighters such as Kessler and Abraham had better home support than Froch. Dirrell did not, so Hennessy was able to get the fight for Nottingham.

I wonder what some people imagine 'promotion' actually means in this day and age. Posters and handbiills? Hennessy certainly did that, his flyers were all over East London at one stage like no other promoter's have been in my memory. Newspaper space? As we know, the papers aren't interested in boxing unless the fighters are already stars — and stars are created by TV, which, unfortunately, Hennessy lost and was locked out of. Appearing on gameshows etc? Again, they'd only want stars. The essential promotional tool is TV, without it a promoter can't spread a fighter's popularity beyond his local area. And Mick had the best TV platform available, with Froch being watched by three times as many viewers as Sky as a whole (not just Sky Sports) has subscribers. You can't get better than that. But then, through no fault of his own or of boxing, ITV suffered a massive financial loss, resulting in Hennessy being out in the cold.

I'm not saying the bloke's perfect. Of course he isn't, nobody is — least of all those of us who wear shorts and gloves, who some people seem to think are beyond reproach. But to my mind Hennessy was doing all the right things then fate dealt him a right shitty hand, as it can do to any of us at any given time. But fair play to him for hanging in there, those fighter defections would be enough to finish me off, many others too I imagine. But Hennessy's made of stronger stuff, he genuinely loves the sport. He'll have his day again, I'm sure of that.

If my memory serves me correctly some of Froch's fights have been on the BBC, before the BBC were put off Boxing courtesy fo Audley Harrison as I seem to remember Froch saying that Harrison "dropped the ball" after getting his TV deal with the BBC after he won gold, but he has been on Sky prior to being on ITV before being shunted onto Primetime after ITV pulled the plug on their boxing before reappearing on Sky since leaving Hennessy Sport to join Matchroom.

King Geedorah wrote:The general view if that Froch was well managed but suffered a little in terms of exposure, which would come under the blanket term 'promotion'.

Mick did a great job of getting Froch and others into position but may have lacked a little clout when it came to getting the pressers into the nationals and online on a regular basis.

It is a case of perspective. Some view Mick as a great manager but not quite as great as a promoter. A lot think he's a brilliant promoter who has been handicapped by TV deals going south. Others point to his last Wembley show as a sign that he is refusing to cut his cloth according to demand, there were a lot of empty seats and it killed the atmosphere. I think he should put his shows on at Ally Pally, decent sized venue and realistic in terms of getting people in and generating an atmosphere.

Sky TV have made it known that they like atmosphere and colour so perhaps a few packed out shows with plenty of noise will see Mick boost his standing with the Sky bods when the new contracts are sorted out.

Primetime carried the Khan fight and it received a lot of publicity so maybe there is something to the bits of criticism.

The third viewpoint, that of the fighters who have moved on, should also be taken into account, they clearly felt that something was lacking, although some of us may say that what was lacking was gratitude on their parts.

I don't know. It is a subject for the more sensible/intelligent amongst us. It is not a black and white issue. When ever I do an article on Froch or a former Mick H fighter I always add, when they talk about exposure, that their fights were carried by ITV in the first instance and then Primetime and Premiersports.

To be fair, I've had Premiersports for a few months now, since Froch-Abraha, and sometimes forget that I have it. The channels have to carry some responsibility for promoting their products. Khan's Primetime tilt was heavily publicised due to the Sky debacle.

As for fighter's loyalty. It works both ways. A promoter may tolerate 2-3 losses but that is it. When a fighter fades they get put to oneside or fed to a prospect, either one from their own camp or another camp, so it does not do to be too loyal in boxing.

Boxing, unlike other walks of life, does not generally reward loyalty or selflessness. Fighters have a small window of opportunity so they have to do what they have to do. As do promoters.
Another top post KG, posing many sensible questions.

The only point I would like to make in response to your post concerns boxers loyality. You raise alot of good points there, but personally I think it is a pretty shitty thing to do to leave your promoter half way through a tournament that the fighter is still in with a chance of winning.

All I can hope for now is if Froch wins the tournament when being interviewed he thanks Mick for the hard work he had in getting him involved and not just Eddie. We might have a Tommy Gunn vs Union Cane moment if he doesn't thank Mick.

Good thread this one. I liked Hennessey's classy campaigns, posters and going against the grain by taking his fighters down the British, European and WBC route.

Froch has been convered by his Local BBC network prior to his previous fights, in a similar way the Beeb sent a reporter out to Japan for Munroe's title fight. That, I presume is due to local interest by the regional station rather than a national decision.

I just hope Mick can come again - who has he got left? Fury and who else?

Agree. People forget that when Froch challenged for the vacant belt, he was able to do it over here. Surely his promoter deserves huge credit for that one. It's a proper belt he's got too.

At the end of the day I'm sure Hennessy is a nicer guy than Don King. But...so what?

Don King is the best boxing promoter of all time.

Niceness without cunning is weakness, and Hennessy is weak.

Something obviously wasn't quite right at Hennessy Sports.

It just seems to me that Sky wanted Froch on their channel (and Barker & Murray too) but didn't want the baggage, in this case being Mick and also a few undercard fighters that aren't exactly compulsive viewing.

I think it's unreasonable to criticise Froch for leaving, he's stayed loyal to Hennessy for the best part of nine years and now having become a fairly big name in the States wants some recognition on these shores. If that means leaving in order to get it, so be it.

Signing the Super Six was the easiest decision Hennessy has ever had to make, guaranteed money from Showtime and a couple of fights guaranteed away from home, meaning he doesn't have to take such a hands-on approach to the promotion.

He did have some good ideas and was fairly innovative, but simply didn't have the money and quality in his stable to become a major player and compete with Allegedly.

Is it hennesseys fault sky sports vindictively refused to give any coverage to froch or his fights on its sky sports news channel or its boxing magazine shows? There also seems to have been a boycott within the murdoch news papers.

Froch was a big star in the usa and european boxing circles, and britains best active fighter along with khan and haye before he joined sky.

I agree those itv fights on at prime time on a saturday night and even delayed on itv4 were more accessible to mainstream sports fans than his fight on sky lat night.

For fucks sakes frochs battles with taylor, dirrel and kessler were also shown free for extended time periods on primetime tv and otherwise froch was hugely promoted in that channels awesome showtime magazine shows which ran freeview.

I'm not saying Mick H will get back to being a major player quickly, he obviously has major difficulties at the moment. But he's not going away and I'm sure he'll get back into a stronger position eventually.
And of course it wasn't hard signing Froch to the S6, it was getting him to that stage which was the achievment. A vacant title fight at home for the belt fighters seem to value most is no mean feat.
The major knock I've heard against Mick is that he has tended to negotiate too hard for today's breed of yuppy TV execs, but I don't know if that's true, it's just what I've heard.
Issues of loyalty aside, and we know better than to expect it in boxing, Carl had very little choice but to leave him if he wanted to be on Sky, who were openly expressing their interest through the media but, as I keep pointing out, Sky will not break their deal structure until summer 2012, when the current deals expire. I don't blame Sky for that, but it was another nail in the coffin for Hennessy - his fighters had to choose between signing with a promoter who had a Sky deal or not being shown by that network.
Again, Mick H was unlucky to have been under contract to ITV when the current Sky deals were signed. But I don't think being watched by millions instead of thousands can be called bad promotion. He just had a bad break when ITV dropped boxing in 2009 and he's still suffering for it today.

I think once the TV deals expire they should make promoters bid for TV slots - it'll create a level playing field for all promoters and give the right to everyone (including you and me if we wish) to attempt to put together a show.

At the minute we've got too many domestic fights not happening because of fighters being with different promoters and contracted exclusively.

Sky have the power to reject an opponent for Ricky Burns, or Stuart Hall or Darren Barker - let's see them get it done!

Carl is more open now. He has been for a few years.
Too many national papers failed to give him coverage - check, go on.
SKY ignored him last year - highlighting the crime killed my chances at SKY, fact.
Primetime never delivered on their promises of publicity, fact.
There are a lot of reasons.

Adios.

Another good post on this topic Glyn, I do have a tendancy to disagree on the fighters loyality issue - particularly Froch. Froch's next two fights were set, its not like they were going to get no exposure. He is getting cracking exposure in the states. I think it would have been a nice thing for Froch to have these last two fights and then sign for Sky.

Sky could have then used Ringside etc to build him up, and use it even as an advertising ploy to get more subscribers.... as they did in the days gone by.... Watch the Super 6 champion exclusive to Sky. Sure they can do that now, but for me the correct thing would have been to see this out with the guy who helped (possibly, who knows his involvement) pioneer the super 6.

I love what Eddie Hearn is doing to boxing, don't get me wrong.... and already we can see more press coverage of Froch.... I think Hearn is going to transform the sport simply because the power of the matchroom brand and its influence on Sky. However, seeing him raise Froch like that after the decision was made... in a fight which Hennessy helped arrange everything towards - date, venue, opponent etc - it just felt very wrong.
