The geezer who used to do the football phone in on sky somehow has managed the in studio gig. I only been watching it an hour and he only been on for about 15 mins and he got 2 people names wrong.
Did Jason Cundy replace him on Your on programme. If so I know why? Surely he should have been given some boxing stats.

Gary Newbon did boxing for ITV in the 80s and 90s and is a legend. He's just a little out of practice.

Gary Newbon, loves his boxing, very knowledgable, used to host fight night in northern areas, great boxing in them days.....

Aye Gaz has been out of the loop for a bit, he's more use to dealing with Manchester United fans calling from London(all of whom were born in Manchester tho, let's not forget that) and being called an "old c*nt" by Ben from Southampton, he'll just be a bit rusty, was the dogs bollocks back in the day.

I think he still claims a part in Nigel Benns epic win over the 'G'-man!

It was weird seeing him on there but he did a good job.

He's definitely got an aura about him. Looks a bit like elton John/ Gary glitter.

Personally I don't think hes ever got over the spear chucker incident.

Ha ha, Newbon is a ledge. Goodness knows why he's been exiled to the greyhounds for so long! He's always had a habit of getting names wrong from time to time.

Hurlock is more of a shit-stirrer than a troll, a bit like what DG used to be. I usually get a laugh off some of his posts.

It's weird for some of us over a certain age to realise younger posters don't know who a legend like Newbon is. I think I'm right in saying he suffered a stroke and that kept him off TV for a while. He clearly isn't up to speed on boxing today yet but if he can get back to top form it would be great to hear his ascerbic interview style again, it was so un-Sky.

Did he, I thought Dickie Davies had suffered a stroke a few years ago - but he appeared to be on good form more recently celebrating 50 years of world of sport (or something like that).

To not know who Gary Newbon is - you would have to be 12 years old. Seriously..

There is no better man to carry out ringside interviews. No sucking up rubbish, just direct questions that we want the answers to. Newbon was never afraid to go into unchartered territory.

too right Glyn, Newbon is from the old days when boxing was on saturday afternoons on itv, najib daho, mo hussein, bright spider(!) etc..was good to see him back the other night...much better than that dave darts wnka

I noticed a few slip up's but thought he was a refreshing change to the usual.

Im starting to find Johnny Nelson hard to watch, even though as a person I like him.

Think it was 1995. The Benn v McClellan bill on ITV. He called Gerald McClellan Mike McCallum if memory serves me correctly but it was in the heat of the moment and the man is still a legend.

Ambrose Mendy told me last year that Gary Newbon was only reason Nigel Benn made weight for the first Eubank fight. He was something like 6lbs over weight and Mendy spoke to Newbon, who took him to a friend's gym in Birmingham to get the weight off.

Newbon's post fight interview for the first Benn-Eubank was an hilarious mess. He'd clearly made his mind up before the fight that Eubank didn't stand a chance and didn't let the fact that he'd won get in the way of his interview. He basically asked the loser the winner's questions and vice versa. He told a bewildered Benn that "there were times when he had you rocking weren't there?" Nigel said "What do you mean? I got stopped!!" There's too much nostalgia about Newbon. Just because he's from way back doesn't mean he was any good. He made a name for himself by being rude to boxers after fights but didn't know his stuff and dropped clanger after clanger. He's always made stupid mistakes - it's got nothing to do with him being rusty.

i've no real problem with newbon...muppet that he can be at times he's part of the sport in my eyes...

but if Sky wanna raise their game then how about getting a few boxing-loving 'celebs' in on the action? post-match interviews etc...

if they chose them wisely they could attract some non-boxing fans...
