I got word today from a very reliable insider that Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs. Victor Ortiz is definitely being discussed for September 17 at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas. The info was shared to me under the condition of complete anonymity. According to my source, the fight should be announced some time this week in a press conference. Rumors about the fight surfaced a month ago, after Mayweather expressed interest in fighting Ortiz after witnessing his win over Andre Berto ringside at the Foxwoods Resort in Mashantucket, Connecticut last April.

In 2010, Cowboys Stadium played host to a couple of big boxing cards both headlined by 8-division world champion Manny Pacquiao . And as much as boxing fans would rather see Mayweather and Pacquiao fighting one another in September at Jerry Jones' state-of-the-art facility, the return of Mayweather in the ring, facing a dangerous and young converted southpaw like Ortiz is definitely good news for the sport.

I hope this happens, as it suggests to me if it does, that there's still a chance of Mayweather fighting Pacman. I imagine that this fight would be used to whet the appetite of the media to see Mayweather fight again.

I do wonder though, all this time between fights, it cannot be good for Mayweather.

Hbo and showtime should boycott the gobby shithouse untill he agrees to fight pac.

If it comes off it will be the first Mayweather fight I'll be really excited about seeing since Judah 5 years ago.

I know we all want PBF-Pac, but I think this is a pretty good match up.

I tend to think the opposite. If Mayweather fights on, but fights anyone except Pacquaio, he'll never fight him. If Floyd is fit and hungry, there is absolutely no reason or excuse for him not to fight Manny. There'll be more money in it, more status and kudos to the victor but, critically, significantly more risk.

This has been rumoured for a month now but great fight if true as i'd give Ortiz a decent chance of winning as long as he fights with the same intensity he did versus berto which was a superb fight plus tightens up his defence. Although wouldn't this thread be better posted in the current scene seeing as it has no relevance to british boxing.

thanks, this is definately a great fight for me and if both Pac and Floyd win i'm certain we'll finally see them fight each other around May next year.

Floyd throws arguably the best right cross in boxing today.
It is a shot that ortiz is wide open for and that he gets caught with constantly.
The fight will be another one sided boxing lesson,floyd will make 20 million dollars and then will vanish untill the same time next year at which point he will do exactly same thing again.

Agreed, Ortiz tended to switch off in fights if he didn't have his opponent out of there after a few rds but against Berto he showed a maturity and steel that he hadn't shown before so i give him a real shot especially as Floyd is now 34 and will have been out of the ring for 16 months.

I just hope Ortiz dosen't try and change his natural aggression and try to box Floyd as he'll lose big otherwise.

I certainly wont be left feeling like a fool when he's long since retired having never fought Pacquiao (or a peak Margarito, Williams, Cotto, Mosley, Tyszu, Casamayor, Freitas). The Ortiz fight, considering he should be fighting Pacquiao, is a joke. Buy into it at the sports expense!
