I was about to start a thread on Rhodes in response to a post on the current scene, about Rhodes only having 7 fights at Light Middle. It is actually 9, but I noticed that all his fights at Light Middle have been scheduled 12 rounds and for either the British, European or Intercontinental title.

I'm just wondering has there been any other British fighter (apart from an established fighter moving up in weight) who has only fought in title fights in "their" division. That must be some kind of record.

Blimey, that's a tough one Stu, depends where you draw the line at 'established'. Rules out Eubank at super middle and cruiser because he'd been a world champ at middle. How about Khan at light-welter, does that qualify?

Yeah, looks like Paul Weir counts.... According to Boxrec Drew Docherty debut was on the Bantam limit and was a 6 rounder. Brodie had a few fights at the Super Bantam limit.

Nah, Khan had title fights and 12 rounders at Lightweight - so I would say he was an established title level fighter who moved up.

Its an amazing stat about Rhodes though, couldn't quite believe it looking at Boxrec at 19/20 and never fought at the weight he gets himself a British title shot and never had any tune up or eliminator (only) fight at the weight... always had some 12 round title on the line and never lost (lets hope it continues). Quite amazing.

Was that my post? I was referring to Rhodes' post 96/97 campaign as a JMW, which actually comprises only 5 fights at the 154 pound limit.

I really can't wait til morning to watch, anybody have a good stream at all???

Naz at Featherweight jumps immediately to mind. All World title fights at Feather too I think.

There are loads who have moved up and just fought at title level. All of Pacquiao's fights at Light Middle as an example, but Naz was a 12 round fighter at Super Bantam.

All of Rhodes' light middleweight fights have been a 12 rounder, yet he never fought a 12 rounder before.

Not sure, it was some post who said his unbeaten run at Light Middle is overated cause he has only fought 7 times there all together.

I think you can generally discount early fights and fights commonly called over the weight fights or non title fights i.e. marking time fights. Yeah by the rules if you weigh over X then you're in the next weight category but Rhodes (for example) could have made 154 in those early fights. It's conjecture though.

I think at the time, the middleweight champ was Neville Brown, who was fairly established and with FW but both he and Bingham (light middle holder at the time) got WBO title shots. From memory Brown's shot was at super middle, and he was well out of his depth but he didn't vacate, whereas Bingham did as the title shot was at light middle...which conveniently opened up a hole for Rhodes.

I guess that's boxing politics and promotional ties at work.
