my travel arrangments are own are, ferry from north sheilds to amsterdam, night in amsterdam then the train to hamburg, two nights in hamburg, then train back to amsterdam to catch ferry back to north sheilds. so i was wondering if anybody else has the same or similar idea and if so could anybody give me some information on the trains i,e best place to get tickets, book in advance, networks to avoid, that sort of thing as the train is the only thing i have not booked and im starting to worry if that may not be a good idea.

The North Shields ferry journey is a chew. I have done it a few times and been done in before i even got to Amsterdam! I looked online for a pal who was going to make a similar trip (but from Hull, much quicker!) and the trains seem quite easy to book and take about six hours, i think. A quick Google search will answer your questions though.
